Blitzkreig – 70 years on

I am currently reading “Venturer Couragious” by James Sanders, about Leonard Trent VC.

Trent flew in the Phoney war with No. 15 Sqn on Fairey Battles based in france , and in 1940 the squadron returned to Britain and coverted to Blenheims before fighting in the Battle of France. I found it interesting about the Battles (I never knew they were used as divebombers, I assumed they were more conventional bombers).

I realised that tomorrow marks to 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Blitzkreig, and I thought I might start a thread here devoted to some of the aircraft types that fought in and against the Blitzkreig.

Feel free to add pics of other types, but here are some photos of the Fairey Battle. (I realise some are Canadian ones, but the pictures are interesting none-the-less). I have always thought it looked way too underpowered, it’s so big it looks like it needed two engines. The book I’m reading says on May 14th, 1940, 67 Battles took off to bomb the bridges between Mouzon and Sedan, only 32 returned. Terrible losses, terrible waste.

Just seeing if you’re all awake, I got no response to my post yesterday on the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Sorry, in reality it was a mental block, yes, should be 65 years. Won’t be long though.
