I have just been listening to Radio 1, and as a joke Scott Mills has asked BLK to be renamed Jo Whiley International. They rang up Blackpool airport on the show and they said it is going to be top of the agenda at tomorrow’s board meeting and that on the website there is a poll – however, their website is down and I want to know exactly what is going on! If anyone else knows anything or any other websites have any info about it, could they please let me know.
Cheers 🙂

Well Blackpool Airport won’t be named after Jo Whiley afterall
Though she is to have an Blackpool airport based Jet2.com aircraft named after her.
[QUOTE]Fly Jo Whiley!
Blackpool Airport has well and truly won the bidding war for Jo Whiley’s affections after their favourite airline (Jet2.com of course!) announced today that they are naming an aircraft after the popular Radio 1 DJ.
Though sadly there will be no Jo Whiley International Airport in Blackpool there will be the Jo Whiley, Jet2.com’s most famous aircraft, based at Blackpool Airport.
Below is a picture showing what Jo Whiley’s aircraft could look like!
Book now for our newest destinations from Blackpool – Amsterdam & Faro, and you too could be taking a low cost ride on the inaugural flight of the Jo Whiley!

If you ask an American to name a place in the East Midlands, they may JUST ABOUT (and I say that with some scepticism!!) name Nottingham , but one place they’re never likely to come up with is Castle Donnington,
… unless they are a mosher… :dev2: :dev2:

What’s so wrong with the name Squire’s Gate?
Come to think of it, what was wrong with Bagington, Castle Donington, Elmdon, Ringway, Speke, Yeadon, etc., etc.! 😉
Andy
Whats wrong with them? They’re not very marketable thats what. If you ask an American to name a place in the East Midlands, they may JUST ABOUT (and I say that with some scepticism!!) name Nottingham , but one place they’re never likely to come up with is Castle Donnington, hence they’ll walk into their travel agent in some small backwater and ask to fly to Nottingham. Now to some extent that may be ok, because IF (and again I am sceptical!) the travel agent is any use she (very sexist here suggesting it is a she…I know!!!) will know that the nearest airport is Castle Donnington, or more likely East Midlands, as it was known, if she did not know that then she may have been able to look up the nearest airport to Nottingham. HOWEVER, now that it has been renamed she can more easily look up Nottingham and be given the code EMA (remember, codes quite often bear no resemblance to the city…see ORD, IAD, MCO and MANY more). So all great, even when called East Midlands she was likely to find it and suggest a connection in BRU. HOWEVER, just to throw a spanner in the works, the same tourist decides not to visit the travel agent, but to hop online. He goes straight to the american version of Expedia or similar and looks for Nottingham, but it doesn’t show up, so he thinks “oh well no airport there, I’ll fly to LHR”. and in that simple move EMA has lost a passenger or two. ADD to that the fact that EMA’s traffic is dominated by LCCs then you can see why it is a problem to be called Castle Donnington or East Midlands, passengers in Spain will see that, and just skip over it, even if they are fancying a trip to the East Mids……BUT, by seeing Nottingham they can identify where it is and EMA doesn’t loose any passengers. The former model of airline would have shown up to those same passengers had they enquired in a travel agent 10 years ago, but today they would risk missing it all together.
Now take Speke, WHY oh WHY rename it Liverpool John Lennon? The answer is simple, although the name is cumbersome it is HIGHLY recognisable to certain markets, such as the USA…..they are using a well known figure to promote the city.

Just listened to Radio 1 again – now Newquay are thinking of doing it as well!! 😮

Indeed, and whilst I have grudgingly accepted “East Midlands”, “Nottingham East Midlands” is still a problem. I still refer to Manchester as Ringway, and Birmingham as Elmdon. I’ve even been to Kirmington Airport once or twice! 😉
And what about Finningley… A few weeks ago, an instructor at the flying school I hire a/c from called Docaster/Sheffield/Scunthorpe/Robin Hood international jetport and used the callsign “Finningley Approach”… Mr Stuffy-ATCO said “We’re not called Finningley anymore” to which the instructor replied “Well why does the beacon on the airfield have the ident. F-N-L then?” 😉 Ah, the old names are the best! 🙂

Michael this is getting too OT but i think ill trust judgement of a Lawyer, Deputy Chief Constable and Head of Legal Orientated Government Agency over your opinion, no disrespect meant.

Never mind re-naming BLK, I’m going to see if we can get the BBC to re-name Radio 1 Chav FM!
Best thing i’ve heard all day 😀

I’m sure he knows what he’s doing andrewm by having them – and a way round it, he could say he is looking after his Irish Mate a Mr J O Whiley’s website and setting it up – I think people are taking this joke a wee bit seriouly, its quite funny and humorous if you look at yourselves from a detatched perspective.

Other than have a non-profit fan site, then there is absolutely NOTHING you can do with these domain names which involves making money.
JW (or representatives) only has to ask for these domain names, at any time, and you have to hand them over.
If JW (or representatives) think you are making any money at all out of these domain names, then they have a very strong argument for for a cease and desist order against you and also such damages as they feel are appropriate.
You cant use somone elses name in any way. The courts will always ask the question “could Mr Average be confused by this into thinking that this venture is linked in some way with the persons name contained in the domain name ?”
If the answer to the above is “Yes” – then you are in a heap of trouble.
Wonder what happened to www.newcastleairport.co.uk then lol

Have you really actually bought those domain names? There are loads of other ideas for them.
www.jo-whileyinternational.co.uk/com/net
www.jowhileyint.com/uk/net
www.jowhileyairport.com/uk/net
www.blackpooljowhileyinternational.com/uk/netEtc, etc…
It’s never going to happen, so I wouldn’t waste my money on them.

I have a absolutely legal plan for it 🙂 My whole family is in legal/law professions so i have a good idea of how not to do anything that is viewed as illegal. I am not going to be done for cyber squatting!

Wont get you anywhere..
IF it did become “Jo Whiley Airport” then the process goes like this:
1) they tell you where you can shove your demands for cash
2) they go to court
3) the judge rules that you have no lawfull reason for owning such a name and orders the domain name transferred to them…. oh… and imposes costs against you.Its all different nowadays, you cant blackmail people for cash anymore by snapping up their business name on a domain and then trying to flog it to them – you have to either have that same name yourself as good reason for owning it OR sell it to them upon request at a reasonable price (which is usually about £50 tops)
Otherwise they go to court – cite the many, many precident cases over the last 5 years – and win totally.
Check the net for the guy who tried to sell Branson and BA their own domain names – he got very, very heavily spanked in court
