Well, the weekend I’ve been waiting for has almost arrived. There is a big air show this weekend where I live, and it is two days, with the Blues flying both days. The first Blue Angel, the number 7 jet (two-seater D model) arrived yesterday and did several media flights. The rest of the team (six single-seat C models) and the C-130 Hercules (Fat Albert) arrived today. Today, the team practiced all throughout the day with the big show practice coming in mid-afternoon. It was great! I live very close to the airport here and they were all around. They flew directly over my neighborhood and even DIRECTLY OVER MY HOUSE. One of them, I assume one of the solos, flew over my house at about 100 to 200 feet of the ground. It was so loud. I was standing in the driveway with my mom and we were watching the whole thing. It was just great, the best part of course when he flew directly over us. There is almost nothing like having an F/A-18 Hornet fly over your house that low! Those F404 engines are so LOUD! It has been so long since I’ve heard a Phantom, I wonder how the two compare. Anyway, they are due to practice tomorrow and then the show is the next two days after that. I am in heaven. I had forgotten just how good-looking a jet the Hornet is. And they climb like rockets! Just amazing!

Saw them at Yeovilton in the 60’s flying Grumman Tigers with a 2 seat Cougar as a hack .

You could be right Lindys, I think I’m confusing it with the CIS SU-27 Flanker team from the year before.

I saw them at Finningly in ’92 with F-18s and C-130 support. Got a feeling they may have appeared at Leuchars on the same day/weekend.
I’m pretty sure they stayed at Finningly. That said, I was 14 and my memory is now shot……

Last time I saw a flying display of an F4 was a few years back at fairford- an F4F if only i had a scanner!!

RE: Blue Angels
Phantom
Just to clarify (I hope) a point about the Phantoms coming to our local show in June. I believe they are from the 20th fighter sqn USAF based at Holloman AFB NM, which provides basic fighter weapons instructor F-4F training for the German airforce. If so, they are in USAF dress and carry the Holloman HO on the tail as well as standard US serials and have red and gold stabilizer flashs. Also coming in from Holloman (I hope) are a pair of Tornados which are also based at Holloman. I understand they are part of a force of 42 from the German Airforce Flying Training Centre which are more or less permanently based there. I do not know if there are any regular Luftwaffe Phantoms
at Holloman but I have often see F-4F’s at the local show and always assumed they came in from Goose Bay in Labrador. I plan to take a few photographs this year as I may not get another chance.
Regards

RE: Blue Angels
F/A-18 one of the quieter fighters? Wow. I guess I haven’t been around enough of them. I want to hear a Phantom really badly. Is there any chance that if I do indeed go to Tyndall that I would be able to see and/or hear one? I know the F-15’s are the stars down there now (especially with that American Fighter Pilot reality-series on now), but they don’t interest me like the F-4 does. Anyway, I did indeed call the Tyndall Public Affairs Office the other day and they said they only do group tours. What about just driving over and looking at the flightline? Is the base typically busy? Can you see the aircraft well? At NAS Pensacola, you can get quite a good view at visiting aircraft. One time when I stopped by with my dad, after going through that monster of a museum, we saw a USAF F-15C, several F/A-18’s, and I believe an EA-6B as well as a C-9, SH-3, and many others. It was interesting. I think a pair of A-10’s also flew in. Anyway, will they allow you on base at Tyndall? 9/11’s effects are farther reaching than at first it would seem I suppose.

What? “Piss off. Oh, and by the way, go and vote for my preference at my poll.”
Persuasive! Kinda like stopping the Ice Cream Van for a choc ice by hurling a motorbike chain through the windscreen.
Phantom,
Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself. 🙂

RE: Blue Angels
Mirage 2000’s and F.1’s are pretty damn loud too, and speaking of Spey engined F-4’s I was at the RAF Coningsby and Finingley airshows in 1992, the year in which the MOD committed sacrilege when they retired the F-4, and XT914 and XV393 were nice and vocal, by the way saw Spanish Hornets take-off at RAF Waddington during Exercise Nomad (forgot what year) and they were plenty loud.

RE: Blue Angels
Loudest fighter? Definately a MiG-25 igniting its two suns at the rear…
Phantoms were loud too, but it differed quite a bit which version. The old -C and -D models were really high-piched (much like two F-104s), which was unfortunately gone with the -E and -G models. The British F-4J’s weren’t high-pitched either, but i can’t tell about more naval variants. Nevertheless, i remember British Spey-powered Phantoms to be louder than regular ones. One 19sqn-bird did permanent damage to my ears (thanks a lot). The nice J79-sound can easily be compared with the noise of Soviet R27, R29 and D30F (the MiG-31 engine).
Any jet flying low over your house is to sound loud, but an F-18 is actually one of the quieter fighters. It doesn’t compare with the noise generated by something like the Tornado, F-14 or F-15.
Oh, and Phantom: that Sewer Hornet might indeed look impressive (especially the professionally misaligned pylons – take a close look at those to amaze the design and development skills involved with this aircraft), but looks don’t say anything about performance.
Regards,
Arthur
ps have you checked the guestbook on your site? Just give Tyndall a call/fax/email, and you should get your visit.

One of the loudest jets I’ve heard is a Tornado F.3 performing a minimum radius turn immediately after take-off.

RE: Blue Angels
Well, the show was great today! I’ll go into detail about it a bit later but lets just say there was a lot more (especially on static display) that I thought there would be. I got loads of pictures, and I am going back tomorrow to get some more. I still gotta get a shot of the Super Bug. I talked to a Marine Corp F/A-18D WSO at the show as well as an OH-58D driver, a CH-47D flight engineer, C-130H guys, T-36B pilot, T-34C pilot, MiG-15UTI pilot, (yes you heard right..I said MiG), as well as B-17 navigator and B-17 ball turret gunner, and a B-25 guy too. All were very friendly. It is fascinating to get these people to talk about their experiences and about their respective aircraft. I learned a good bit, and just a word for the wise. Always ask a few questions when you see a pilot or other flight crew member. You can learn quite a bit, and I know we all love to learn. The A-10 demo was fabulous! Never seen anything like it. What a jet! I’m still aching to see and hear a Phantom. Is the Phantom the loudest fighter? Or do other fighters beat it out?

RE: Blue Angels
Geforce the U.S. does still operate manned F-4’s, both the Navy and the Air Force, they are still drones but they can be used for manned flights as well as the more usual NOLO/NULLO flights.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-04-02 AT 07:53Â PM (GMT)]Yes, the F-4F’s at Holloman are wearing US markings on the tail. But they also have a German flag somewhere painted on the jet. The US doesn’t operate manned F-4’s anymore, so they must be Luftwaffe.
There aren’t Tornado’s based in Holloman, I’m sure of that. It could be that the Luftwaffe has a temporary training unit with Tornado’s in the US, which operate alongside the F-4F’s.

RE: Blue Angels
Phantom I will trade my Phantoms for your F/A18E. I have been fortunate to see many Phantoms at the local show but I am certainly looking forward to the Super Bug. Maybe next year.
Geforce, I will try and get the story on the Phantoms but I believe they are US unless they are Luftwaffe training units operated with US markings. This year the Luftwaffe contribution to the show is a pair of Tornados also listed as being from Holloman.
