Blue Hurricane!

I have recently recieved in the post a model of Hurricane G-AMAU in Kings cup air race colours.

The model is a Corgi collectors club item and on the Aviation Archive forum there is much discussion as to what shade of blue it should be…

I have spent hours searching the net and im struggeling to find a picture or any text relating as to what ‘shade’ of blue was used:confused:

For some reason i have it in my head that a Dark ‘navy’ blue was used however i can’t prove this:rolleyes:

If anyone has any pics or references to G-AMAU i would be extremely greatful

Help!!!!!!!!

Very nostalgic pictures of QJ-J, thanks for posting them. That was also my first real live Spitfire, I vividly recall it arriving at a Culdrose Air Day in the late 1950’s, flown by Jeffrey Quill and owned by Vickers.
And the lad in short trousers and school cap in front of the Rotodyne….classic!

Chris,

Thanks for posting.

I think your images were taken at the RAeS Garden Party at White Waltham on 22 June 1958.

This was the first occasion that my school friend and I had got up close to an all breathing live Spitfire and Hurricane.

I remember the Rotodyne exactly as your image.

Those dark clouds in your shot came on to rain and this shot was taken sheltering beneath the Hurricane. 🙂

1957, or just thereafter, seems about right, at least for the Rotodyne shot which seems to show it in a fairly early state, great images once again!

Lovely shot of the Hurricane from Keith Gaff as well.

White Waltham RAeS Garden party

Hi Mark and everyone – thanks for your kindly welcome to the forum. I have a photo of the Spitfire and also attach a couple more on that day which may help identify the date. Please ignore the 1957 in the slide ID – it’s by no means the correct date. . . . .

regards Chris

During the current work being undertaken on PZ865, we removed a blanked over air scoop about the size of a 2p coin. Under the rivetted blanking plate was the intake scoop in the original blue paintwork:) I duly fetched my books of colour chips and set to work. Although the colour does change in different lighting conditions (they all do) it was a strong match for one of them: Oxford Blue. Here’s a picture, you decide…

Blue Hurricane

Here’s a rather nice colour picture of the aircraft. This is the last Hurricane ever built and the blue finish was Hawkers house colours. Other vintage aircraft in the Hawker stable at that time were painted in the same shade. When competing in the Kings Cup Races it represented Princess Margaret. Today the Hurricane flies with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
