Today bmi have announced that they are to take delivery of 4 A319’s with options on 5 more.
The first 3 aircraft are scheduled for delivery within the next 6 months and will be available for the 2004 summer schedules commencing 28th March 2004. The 4th aircraft is to be delivered in early 2005.
The aircraft will initially be introduced on bmi services from London Heathrow to Brussels and subsequently on a range of bmi domestic and European routes from Heathrow. The aircraft will be configured with a maximum of 132 seats in a flexible business/economy cabin.
The opportunity to bring forward the single fleet strategy has occurred due to the advantageous availability of these aircraft in the world market and a 25 per cent increase in passengers carried by bmi during the first eight months of its current financial year.
Sir Michael Bishop, bmi chairman, said “The soft world market for aircraft has enabled us to make a significant step forward at beneficial prices to our Blue Sky project to reduce cost, improve operational efficiency and derive long term economic benefits from a single aircraft fleet type.”
By Spring 2005, the bmi airbus fleet will consist of:
3 Airbus A330’s
10 Airbus A321’s
11 Airbus A320’s
4 Airbus A319’s.
bmi’s fleet of 13 Boeing 737’s have already been transferred to bmibaby. bmi regional also operates 13 Embraer jets.

P.S: Does anybody know if the Fokker 70’s/100’s are still in service with bmi?

I flew on a bmi F100 a couple of years ago and found it great. If your near the front its fine, noise is a serious problem near the back but the front was good.
Look forward to seeing the A319 in bmi colours, should look very nice.

Yup, but can anyone expand upon the rumour. Miami has been in discussions with a few international airlines for new services, most notably Aer Lingus. I was wondering if the 3rd A330 would be used or maybe the 2nd A33 being used on alternate days to IAD and MIA?

Hi,
Yes that is the rumour Saab 2000.

Did I read somewhere that they have cover arrangements with US Airways and Virgin in case a 330 is out of action for any significant period?

Hi,
Has anyone been on a bmi F100 recently? I think you would know where I was coming from if you had.
I have been on a KLMuk Cityhopper F-100 and I found them to be a nice aircraft to fly in. I didn’t find the noise a problem but it was a bit worn from the inside (Was Built in 1989!). There was lots of legroom as well, KLMuk Cityhopper F-100’s are in a 2+3 seating configuration (Same as bmi).
Thanks

Hi Nationwide Air,
From what I’ve heard, many Diamond Club frequent flyer members have complained about the legroom in Business (I understand some of the F100’s are still in bmibaby config from last time they had them), noise on board and generally being old and tired! They still have a 2 + 3 config in economy and business class. I guess they all got used to Airbus and now having to get on the F100’s isn’t so nice for them.

Hi,
I understand the F100’s have been extremely unpopular back at LHR, but maybe the bmibaby passengers aren’t so fussy
Why is this airbusbaby?
Thanks

Hi eveyone…
I work for bmi myself. Just to update you, the latest is that the F100’s which are currently at LHR covering the 737’s will be coming back to EMA to operate for bmibaby over the winter timetable. Apparently, bmibaby want to get rid of the 737-500’s, and they will also loose two of their 737’s based at EMA over the winter. These aircraft are believed to be covering the new operations for bmibaby from MME. The strange thing is though, these F100 flights for bmibaby will be operated by LHR based mainline crew!
I understand the F100’s have been extremely unpopular back at LHR, but maybe the bmibaby passengers aren’t so fussy 😉
As for the A330’s, we still have only 3. When the SAA leased aircraft comes back shortly, it is believed it will be leased out again. There is no back-up aircraft for long haul operations, but bear in mind that each Tuesday the Washington services does not operate and one A330 is taken into engineering instead.
I’m pretty sure that bmi regional will keep the Embraer fleet. The ERJ135’s are used for route testing to see if a route is viable before upgrading to a ERJ145.

And didn’t they have 4?
Thanks Preston:)

2 of the A330s are MAN based doing Washington and Chicago runs, the other is leased to SAA.

Anyone know how the A330s are doing? Are they all fully utilised now?
