Interesting move!
Southampton welcomes a new airline – bmi regional to start direct Southampton-Amsterdam flights this winter
This winter, Southampton Airport will welcome the UK’s most punctual airline to the region.
bmi regional, part of the bmi group and a subsidiary of bmi – Heathrow’s second largest carrier – will launch its first ever services from the airport with a direct service to Amsterdam, beginning 29 October 2006.
Operated by bmi regional’s all jet fleet of Embraer aircraft, the new service will depart for Amsterdam four times daily Monday to Friday, once on Saturday and twice on Sundays with a flight schedule conveniently timed to meet the needs of both business and leisure passengers.
bmi chief executive officer, Nigel Turner commented:
“As the UK’s premier regional carrier we continue to build an ever stronger network of national and international routes from key UK regional airports and I’m delighted that bmi regional is able to bring its award winning service to Southampton with this, our first ever route from the region.“Amsterdam is a popular business and leisure destination as the national, financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands, but it’s also an important continental gateway where passengers can be assured of convenient onward travel connection with our Star Alliance partners.
“I’m confident that that our new service will not only be welcomed by the discerning business traveller, but by all travellers who have a strong desire for quality and choice.”
Managing Director of Southampton Airport, Chris Butler said:
“I am delighted to welcome bmi regional to join our network of airlines and tour operators. As an airline that prides itself on punctuality, bmi regional is the perfect partner for Southampton Airport – the Fast Track airport for central Southern England.“In continuing to attract the UK’s premier airlines, Southampton Airport plays a key role in boosting the region’s economic competitiveness. It improves access to the international market place for local businesses, further strengthens the region’s appeal to new companies looking to relocate, and promotes the growth of inbound tourism.
“bmi regional has responded to the demand for additional capacity on the Amsterdam route and we are delighted to be giving even more choice to the South’s business and leisure travellers.”
A full service airline operating a range of domestic and international routes from key regional airports, bmi regional is officially the best airline for punctuality in the UK and renowned for excellent in-flight service and frequent flyer benefits.
All flights offer the speed and comfort of an all-jet aircraft service and separate business and economy class seating on board with complimentary refreshments. Business lounge facilities and range of check-in options, including online check-in, also ensures speed and efficiency at the airport.

Have just looked at making a booking for November – flights total £48 but when you add the £53 for airport taxes etc it does make it expensive. Can fly the orange lot from LGW for £48 inc taxes so even adding parking etc it is still worth flying from LGW.

Interesting news but I wonder where the aircraft will park. SOU already has 15 aircraft that stay overnight and only 14 stands.

Interesting new route, but what I find more interesting is the withdrawal of the Luton to Brussels route. When did that happen? Did it even start?

Hi
It’s not a W-Leg flight acording to the bmi flight scheduled guys. Looks as though an Embrear Regional jet aircraft will be based at Southampton.
I wonder if they bmi british midland are moving one of the 2 LHR based Embrears as the Airbuses will be coming back after the end of the summer charter season??
