Read an interesting article in the Skyport newspaper we get down here at LHR that BD are thinking of dropping the ‘bmi’ name and changing its name back to ‘British Midland’…would be interested to know what people’s opinions are about this and whether they think the chances of this actually happening are real enough, and whether it will actually do anything to help change the fortunes of the carrier or not?

If BMI change anything, it should be their caterers. Their inflight sandwiches are awful. I’ve had sandwiches on several airlines – BA, BD, Sabena, VLM, SN Brussels – and the BD ones are by far the worst.
I do prefer the name British Midland, BMI doesn’t really mean anything. I also preffered the livery they had prior to those weird patches they have now.

Years ago I used to fly BD a lot, on their LPL-LHR service. Before that I worked in London for travel agents, British Midland slowly expanded, from LHR to AMS, the GLA and EDI competing with the BA shuttle . Jet services were with DC9s. I feel the airlines in recent years has lost its way, Im not sure what they want to be.
p.s im probably sentimental but i prefer British Midland as a name, and I like the logo before the Blue and Red BM make over

As an old British Midland traveller, way back, and a great admirer of Michael Bishop, I suppose I feel that with his demise and the Lufthansa take-over, perhaps, as someone else suggested, Lufthansa UK might not be such a bad idea.

The reason they changed from BM to BMI was the letters BM on the tail in the US is the term the septics use for Bowel Movement, so BM was not a good idea :p

Can they bring back their old colour-scheme?
No, they are sticking with the current colours.
a. with only 1 A330 in the fleet now according to there own website, they will not be very “international”
Can only an A330 fly internationally? The airline has been using much of it’s fleet until now on flights to Europe and beyond.

Can they bring back their old colour-scheme? Perhaps bring the B737’s back from bmiBaby, with the grey wings.
The change to bmi from British Midland could have been so much more, but it was not to be.

BMR = bmi regional with callsign Kittiwake. They’ve got their own AOC now. Perhaps make them a bit more marketable.

Saw some of their flights a few days ago going out with the callsign “BMR”, so they’ve changed that too..

What do you mean “are thinking of”? They have already done it. All official communications and most adverts call the airline British Midland International and most announcements on board are made in the same way.
Has been like this for about two months.
Where have you heard about it, Mark? It seems to me that this is a very recent announcement, judging by the number of stories published online only in the past few days. Not only that, but the article below seems to suggest that bmi have yet to implement any chances.
Personally though, I do not see any point in doing this. Fair enough, the airline says ‘bmi’ means nothing to customers in the Middle East, but there are no plans to re-paint aircraft with the new titles, and, in the UK, it will continue to be known as bmi. So what exactly is changing?

They will be rebranding as British Midland International… there will be fleet and job cuts and Lufthansa will take a lot of LHR slots…not good times ahead for BMI it seems.

So if thats the case, why does their website still call it ‘bmi’ then, and how come a newspaper which is published on a weekly basis only just reported it now?

I heard this rumour a few days ago. I like the bmi branding and colour scheme.
