bmibaby Teesside routes confirmed

bmibaby today confirmed the routes which are to start from Teesside International Airport. Joining the existing routes of Belfast International and Malaga, new routes are to:

Alicante
Jersey
Nice
Palma
Prague

All of these routes will start on the 30th April 2004 except for Prague which will start on the 28th April 2004.

Bookings and timetables will be available from 10am on Friday 16th January so Im not sure about frequencies etc yet. However bmibaby did say they will provide over 40 flights a week.

Its funny how bmibaby are “commencing” flights from Teesside to Malage evn though they already fly the route!

Regards
dan777

P.S: I do know this was mentioned in a separate post a week or so ago but I just thought I would share the confirmed news!

Hi folks,

I’d be surprised if bmibaby pulled out of MME after starting more routes. bmi mainline have had an agreement with MME to operate the MME-LHR route for some time, and obviously having links at MME, ground handling agents etc, its fairly easy to start operations from there.

Don’t forget also, bmibaby are getting rid of some of the 737-500’s and getting more 737-300’s soon. By operating mainly W patterns from MME, they don’t need to base crew there and have to recruit bmibaby dedicated cabin staff. bmi don’t use the same cabin staff on each division like MYT/VZ seem to.

I think MME will be a sucess and you’ll see an aircraft based there soon once the routes are proven and warrent a based aircraft.

Regards,
Markus

Not a problem Pembo, i just hope baby don’t let done the Teeside locals if they do get the support in the first year.

Personally i think that some of the lo-cos are now jumping into any airport that doesn’t have a lo-co now. Coventry would be an ideal location for the likes of Thomsonfly with location, but there are no facilaties at the moment. Perhaps if Thomsonfly had chose Teeside with a large catchment area and the basic facilities available i might be more optimistic than i currently am. I know Thomson on the holiday side of things haven’t a MME supporter really over the years but they have never had a presence at CVT either. It more the airline than the Airport i am doubting! Best of luck again to MME though!

perhaps the could call their first aircraft “Tees-the-baby”!!!

Preston – you may well be right long term, and I wouldn’t question your judgement. But until we know what is going to happen to BMi Baby long term (and none of us do), we can only go on the facts and those facts are that a low cost operator is providing regular flights from Teesside – this is a good thing.:)

But the fact that they are here and giving the local people and business’ a boost is a good thing. Hopefully the situation will last.

On a hypothetical note; my biggest fear for MME would be if MYT went down. With only MYT willing to put a based aircraft here through the summer, no MYT flights would have a massive impact for us.

Pembo on paper it has given a huge profile to MME that bmibaby are moving in, but from what i can see and hear a lot of uncertaities lie with the Teeside flights.

At the moment they have cut the proposed basing of aircraft by 50%, now down to one aircraft, and thus they are taking flights from other basis on a trial basis. If bmibaby can aquire more aircraft and operate a more stable programme with more passenger flexability for flights in them then things may start to look a bit better. Take the Belfast route for example. If it remains at 1x daily then the market base isn’t going to be too large for it. 1x daily would restrict buisness passengers into having to stay away from home overnight, and not be able to do a visit in a day trip. Amsterdam, and to a lesser extent Beflast at LBA i hear has a lot of day tripping passenges – whether buisness or leisure, and as you say with Jet2 and Easyjet up the road offering daily flights on the majority of these 2/3/4 x weekly sun runs they will have more flexability and possably better vaqlue fares if flights do fill up. Bmibaby seem to be trying to do a lot of expanding of routes and flights with NO expansion of aircraft. Something somwhere will give, and if its the number of of aircraft that doesn’t increase then i can see the bmibaby base at MME closing down. Just my thoughts and i would like to be worng on it!

Easyjet; Teesside and Tyneside are worlds away in terms of location and culture. A drive from Middlesbrough to Newcastle is near on 50 miles with many other cities in between such as Sunderland and Durham. Teesside airport should definitely NOT be called Newcastle South; as it happens it is being renamed Durham & Tees Valley Airport, so fortunately I don’t have to worry.

I think calling it Newcastle South would be a really bad idea. It would have no real identity of its own then, its not in Newcastle plus it would really seem like it was playing second fiddle to NCL (which of course it is but it would seem more obvious with a name like NCL south.)

I don’t know if you were watching ‘Look North’ (News) in December but it came up with lots of new names for Teesside airport and 1 was ‘Newcastle South Airport’, Well I think that would of been a great name as Newcastle Airport could of been renamed to ‘Newcastle North Airport’ and it could of been like Gatwicks ‘North Terminal’ and the ‘South Terminal’. It would of been great in my opinion as Newcastle would of had a new terminal and Teesside had a new name and a excelent future!

Like the idea but a bit confusing for visitors:D

bmibaby – expanding – hmmm – looks more like a chopping and changing of the same 13 aircraft – they will have cut back somewhere else to operate these services!

Don’t know if this is good news really for MME – What happens if bmi pull out in a year or so? Good news for the moment though – fingers crossed!

I think it will change a lot, but it will always be behind.
At the minute, is Teesside a 2 leveled Airport as I have never been?
