I am after Wellington help again please. After endless searching I have finally tracked down a photograph of a BOAC Wellington in North Africa (they had four for a year or so). However, it is in the Life magazine archives and they simply do not answer requests about reproduction. So my questions are; does anyone know how to crack that, or alternatively, are there any other BOAC Wimpy shots out there?
Thanks

How much do WW2 images charge for repro in print? I believe Getty act as agent for LIFE-TIME images in the UK so their London office may be able to grant repro permission even if access to the negs/print is impossible (i.e, working from the scans online) e/.g. http://images.google.com/hosted/life/57f1d135c21d7233.html
And thanks to pogno for the flickr link

Thanks to everyone who responded, several shots of BOAC Wellingtons are now waiting to go into the book.

Life magazine might not have the originals.
I’ve found quite a lot of images used in the magazine from 1930’s to 40’s are now in the Associated Press archive.
Might be worth a look. Try something like North Africa, or Desert in the advanced search with a 39 to 45 date range.

You could try the British Airways museum…
I wish I’d read this earlier then I could have looked when I was in the museum today. Having checked myself recently, I’m 99% sure we don’t have any Wellington pictures at all. Certainly there are none in the organised print archive.
Incidentally, the Putnam on Vickers aircraft has a picture captioned as a Wellington C. Mk 1A in use by BOAC, but that would appear to be incorrect. For a start, the C.1A designation wasn’t used until 1943, some time after BOAC had finished with their Wellingtons, and the aircraft is coded NQ, which is 24 Sqn’s code.

Steve,
You could try the British Airways museum at ba.1.museum@britishairways.com. I”ve found the organisation very helpful in the past, although I’ve not asked about photographs.

It unfortunately doesn’t help if you need to reproduce it for publication!

I’ve had the same problem in the past when looking for an article on a particular Pan Am Boeing 707
Flight incident which appeared with pictures in Life magazine. However the solution is easy (hopefully). The picture on the internet should tell you which issue of Life magazine it appeared in and the publication date. From there on go onto ebay.com which covers the American market (not ebay.uk) search on Life magazine and purchase that particular issue. You will then have your own magazine containing the picture. If that particular issue is not listed try the search again periodically and it will hopefully eventually appear for sale.

I don’t want a Warwick, I want a Wellington.

Search for BOAC Vickers Warwick instead.
