BoB movie help

Asked by a chum elsewhere, he needs to identify the points in the movie where

The Spitfire squadron is bounced from above and slaughtered
A scramble
The scene where the parachute fails to open
The dead body lying face down in the water

I’ve supplied my own ideas, anybody else care for a go?

Thanks everybody.

I’m exceptionally impressed both with the input from here and the use to which the knowledge has been put.

The friends son has composed some music to illustrate a wartime aerial combat theme and my friend has cut together the appropriate parts of the BoB movie (For home consumption only) and set it against the music. Stunning.

I enjoyed the diversions here too.

Thanks again

Dead body, Charley Lambert, in the water 29 mins 50 seconds
First spitfire formation take off (not strictly a scramble) is cranfield’s squadron. Taking off from Hawkinge at 37 mins and 55 seconds in.
First proper spitfire scramble is started by Arnold picking up the telephone and shouting ā€œtwo section scrambleā€ 41mins 21 seconds into the film, this leads into the bombing of duxford sequence, then at 44mins 45seconds we have Arnold picking up the telephone again and saying, in a puzzled voice ā€œit’s a squadron scramble sir??ā€ and Skipper says ā€œdon’t be wet get me the duty controllerā€.. Bombs then start to fall on the airfield, North Wheald I think; this is the start of the ā€œget one upā€ scramble. at 46 mins 34 seconds we have Spitfire tyres screeching on grass and the fuel bowser going up just before said screeching Spitfire crashes into it.
At 1 hour 6 mins 7 seconds we have the start of the ā€œstand down or blow upā€ formation take off of Cranfield’s squadron, the start of this sequence buy the hut is, I think, Duxford but the actual take off filmed from the air is Hawkinge, and leads into them being ā€œbouncedā€ at 1 hour 8 mins 10 seconds by the Buchon’s ME109’s BF109’s or what anyone is happy to call them šŸ˜€ .
1 hour 13 mins 01 seconds…miss York in Stockings. :diablo:
1 hour 34 mins 15 seconds is the start of the ‘Aerial Ballet’ sequence at 1 hour 56mins 48 seconds is the parachute not opening scene.
Hope I haven’t missed anything. I urge you all to get the dvd out and watch it again to make sure. I love this film its my all time favourite.

That’s quite ironic, since the shot works quite well in that context!

This is true – it’s on the documentary on the Special Edition. As to positioning in the film, it’s in the ‘Aerial Ballet’ section set to Sir William Walton’s The Battle in the Skies or something like that.

The shot was the last aerial shot they were trying to take and numerous things kept going wrong. It was important because it was supposed to be Sq Ldr Canfield (Michael Caine) bailing out – hence the script change killing him off (‘He Blew Up!’ etc.). When it came to the editing, the shot of the dummy falling…. and falling…. and falling fitted so well with the music it was used and is apparently the longest single shot in the whole film!

However, at the time, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back – shooting with the aerial unit had gone on too long and was costing too much. I think the whole unit was sacked actually, not just the stunt co-ordinator.

In my mind that is one of the most dramatic shots as it veers away completely from the normal storylines that- Plane explodes and they die, to the crew bail out and chute opens and they live, this makes you sit up and realise that even when they escaped from their plane death was still around the corner and brutal.

A few years ago I remember being told by the special effects man that the scene with the duff chute wasn’t actually intentional.

It was the third take with the dummy and on each occaision the radio controlled chute had failed. Because the camera followed the dummy all the way down, it turned into the longest special-effects shot in the film, but the special-effects man got sacked anyway!

The scene with the duff ‘chute is in the September 15th battle.

The Spitfire squadron was indeed Michael (Canfield) Caine’s unit.

The dead pilot in the water was from Caine’s squadron, too, while it was still being commanded by Christopher Plummer. I think his name was Charlie.

The best “scramble” i think, is the “dont just stand there GET ONE UP” one after which Archie say’s “i’m with you old boy but i’ve left my stomach behind”
there is, i think, another one involving “skippers” squadron started buy Arnold picking up the telephone and shouting “scramble”. as i am away from my DVD’s i will have to check.
Dezz

It goes IIRC –

Arnold “It’s a squadron scramble Sir!!”

Skipper “Don’t be wet, get me Group !!”

After which as the bombs start, they run out and Skipper yells at Simon “Don’t just stand there get one up !!!” Whereupon Simon drops his mug of tea and does so. Shortly after he is jumped by the proverbial Hun in the sun, and is killed.

Boy do I need to get a life

The Spitfire squadron is bounced from above and slaughtered, this is where Canfield is indeed killed (“he just blew up”)
A scramble………….(when Duxford is bombed “God’s teeth…take COVER” says Kenneth More’s character (Groupie) after admonishing SO Harvey (don’t you go dribbling there Moggster!!) for her WAAF’s using their gas mask containers for handbags….
The scene where the parachute fails to open…sad one that
The dead body lying face down in the water….this F/O Lambert who has a dicky oil pressure (“They will be your trouble now” says Plummer to Canfield, who is going to Scotland to teach alot of kids with “down on their Faces” which is of course more dangerous “than fighting the Germans”!!!

oh my goodness, I am so SADDDDDDD!!!!! šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜€ 😮 :diablo:

I think the deadbody laying face down is the part near the begining where the pilot wants to do an “engine test” and is bounced by Falke. It is the same time as Caine [Canfield ] takes over the Squadron,i think.
