This from the Channel 4 “100 best war movies” website
Verdict
Despite the luxury of a top-flight cast, this latter-day David and Goliath story remains a frequently tedious experience, punctuated by stilted dialogue and one interminable dogfight after another
Yup, it would have told the story much better if it hadn’t had all those aircraft flying around.

And where was Battle of the River Plate, Sink The Bismark, Cockleshell Heroes, etc.?
Just goes to show how subjective these “best ofs” are and probably more dependent on the average age of the people polled than pure quality. I wouldn’t have said Casablanca was a “War Movie” – yes set in wartime but so werelots of other films.

how the heck did shaving private ryan get top spot over the likes of BoB, dam busters, 633 sqn, Great escape, angels 1-5, reach for the sky and dirty dozen???? suppose there’s no accounting for taste. and back on topic, looks like the critics missed the point (again) .
Greg
Angels One-Five wasn’t even bloody in it – unless I missed it??
Neither was Dark Blue World, or Wings (bloody Oscar-winner, Best bloody Picture, bloody 192bloody7!! 😡 ), or Dawn Patrol (either version) but there were plenty of other obscure films that I’d never heard of!
Or First of the Few! 😡

So what was No.1 (in their “expert”) opinion?

Time would have been better spent watching BoB on DVD (or Empire of the Sun, Memphis Belle, Dark Blue World et al) instead of low-budget crud on yawny telly.

Re ‘Battle’
I never pay much attention to the critics.
I watched the 100 greatest war films and there were films in there I wouldn’t give time on television.
For what its worth ‘Battle’ is personally my all time favourite film ,and although there are historical faults (aircraft types /marks etc) I think its a great film, with Goodwins stirring musical score to set the scene for a critical time in Great Britains history.
I certainly don’t think remaking it authentically with computer generated images would result in a better film.As previously stated it was an ariel battle and while the dogfights are not easy to follow ,I would guess that’s how it was,

Well, I’m suprised it got as high as No.29 given that all the reviews by film buff’s I’ve read have said pretty much the same thing! 🙁
I too have always found the comments about ‘endless dogfights’ or ‘one dogfight after another’ rather strange considering the film was about one of the greatest aerial battles of the 20th century.
