Continuing on with the classic airliners theme…
Boeing 707s that have graced Southend Airport over the years…

Waited for hours for her to take off she made it late evening.

Taken with my old (very old) 110mm camera!

Now an impossible shot, that the Pets at Home PCworld, Carpet right and the other have set up.

135 fixed lens point and shoot camera.

Taken from a bus on an airport open day in the late 80’s early 90’s

Storm had just passed over head.

Waiting to go in to the hanger.

Azabijan or how ever its spelt.

Nice leg

This beauty took off for a flight test during the Clacton Airshow movments the No4 engine was banging away but they still went for it.

Passing overhead.

When she returned, it was clear that she could not land off the approach as she was far too high but she preformed a Casarn (?) dive and pulled up to fly the length of the runway at this hight and stright over our heads found out later she was testing the GPWS!

Great story & nice to hear…..so what was the big issue with Radios at Southend. There were signs everywhere about Airband Radios contravening the so called “Airport Bylaws” but if you went to LHR for the day everyone had them on the Queens Building!
I constantly remember as a teenager hiding mine in my pocket with an earpiece inside my coat. Airport Security ( retired & well past it bobbies ) were always out to catch you if you were in the carpark or the “waving off terrace”, and as for the “Airport Duty Officers” they were the worst!
Does anyone know why no radios at Southend in the 70`s & 80`s or was it the same elsewhere?

😀
At the 06 end BEFORE the gates went up the Clacton airshow movemnets were doing thier thing, there must have been about 6 or 7 of us just standing there watching and taking photos when…
A car pulled up behind us looked round and you’ve guessed it a police car was sitting there thinking it was marching orders time every one started to gather thier camera gear and quickly very very quickly switching off radios when
The cops got out the car ans asked when the BBMF was due to take off! they stayed to watch even asking if we could put our radios BACK on so they could hear the chatter, after the BBMF departed they were about to drive off when I said Canberra was taking off in a few minites the reply was *******ing Ell we’ll wait for that!
Once she had depart the coppers said enjoy the rest guys dont get too sunburnt and drove off!

Great Pictures Nick,
Especially the last one, don`t see that too often now!
I had to do a bit of a Grin at the shot of the Blue/White one on 33`s Threshold, half way up Warners Bridge. I took a shot of a Herald from there in 1987 with a Praktika 35mm + 300mm Lens, just as a Police car was passing.
What happened next was comical. Police car turned round, told me ( & wife ) to come with him, took us to the Terminal Building, Frogged Marched through in front of 100`s of passengers ! ( it was busy then) – Into Special Branch office, & ask why i was taking photos with such a large lens!
Lots of questions later, and for no reason they told us to go….so we did – quickly. :):)
This is Southend I`m talking about & not a Greek Military base !

Nice stuff!! Nothing like a BIG jet going overhead and you’re close to it! A very nice design the 707…a shame I was’nt alive to see Tex Johnson roll it twice over Seattle back when it first came out…
