Hi,
Has anyone got any information on these aircraft? I know they had a hump on the fuselage due to the JATO being fitted but I could do with some info and pics on the JATO instalation on the belly of the 727.

Thanks for that wieesso, but I think that was a military C-47 being shown. From the information I was given, the Aspen aircraft were only equipped with a single bottle and that picture shows at least 2.

I just wish I could find the pictures of an Aspen Airways DC-3 on climbout from Aspen, CO using a JATO. That must have been a sight to see.
They mention no specific airline

I checked my various Boeing books and couldn’t find a good photo to post.
I’ve seen one somewher, perhaps the first (1966) edition of Boeing Aircraft, by Peter M. Bowers published by Putnam (it’s not in the second eition).
The Beech 18 came with an optional RATO set-up…under the nacelles, IIRC.
Also, the Metro turboprop had an optional unit in the tail (instead of the normal pointed tail cone it had an opening in the rear) to give you just enough time to get the gear up if an engine failed on take-off. I saw some on ships that flew into Sun Valley, Idaho in the early 80s.

Hardly an impressive climb rate going off that video though.
If it was, I’d be surprised, MTOW, engines reduced to simulate takeoff at MMMX (Mexico City) then cutting an engine at V1? Talk about “worst case scenario”. 🙂
There was a VHS I had that included a more normal takeoff where they used the bottles (you had to use them before they expired) and the climb rate with everything working normally was quite impressive considering they were starting from Mexico City which is already at 7,300 feet and it was 40*C+ 🙂
