Not really one to keep up with things too much.. just stumbled across a pic of the first flight of the “new” 747-800
http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=6771880
Ahem… is this not a 747-100 with a new paint job and some really stupid looking cake cutters on the engines?
No doubt it has some new stuff on it that can’t be seen by looking at it, but, really… it IS a -100….small upper deck, no winglets…

Ooh rattled some nests there lads, take it easy.. just an observation… it LOOKS like a -100, IMO the 747 general shape is way out of date(50’s conception) Boeing should think outside the box a bit, like Airbus done with the A380:dev2:,design something that looks modern maybe?… flak jacket on………….
I much prefer the look of the 748 with the small hump – very retro. Not a fan of the cake-cutter engines though.
I thought the 400 series lost the elegance of the original Jumbo with that horrible extended, flattened hump… perhaps I’ll put a flak jacket on now too 🙂

I first thought that the 747-8 looked a little dated next to the A380. I suppose it still does a little, but it’s definitely a fine aircraft. Also, it was rushed into development as a belated competitor to the A380, meaning that a clean-sheet design wasn’t feasible.

The wing:

The new wings aren’t easily seen in a side-view drawing…
Can anyone post a comparision of the new and old wings?
Boeing should think outside the box a bit, like Airbus done with the A380:dev2:,design something that looks modern maybe?
You do realize that airliners and the aerodynamics that make them fly aren’t quite the same thing as putting a new grille and wings on a Vauxhall…
Airlines are looking for cost and efficiency, not the latest boy-racer go fast stripes.

I totally agree, but then again, why change something that works? Airbus have the A380 because they didnt have anything like it before (fair enough the A340 but not quite the same as a double decker)
I forsee that boeing will stick with th generic 747 shape for quite some time to come, after all people instantly know that a 747 is a Boeing aircraft 🙂

N747EX = 747-8F Id imagine that the Intercontinental version will have a longer upper deck.
Winglets are absent from the 787 too, that is obviously a mistake then? winglets can be replaced with fancy wing design, not apprent in either photo you have linked.
The crinkled TE to the engine cowling is for noise reduction, you are correct
Im pretty sure that the 747-8 has the lengthened sections immediately before and after the wing…

You guys have better computer resolution than me! Or better eyesight. Anyway, good luck to Boeing.

0 out of 10 for observation.
For one, there are no winglets as you can clearly see the raked wingtips.
Also, it has a longer fuselage. The first change in fuselage length since it left the drawingboards in the 60s I believe. (SP not withstanding)
Oh, and the upper deck windows of the 747-100 were seperated much further apart.
A 100 model from a similar angle:

Those “stupid looking cake cutters” help dampen the noise of the engines and are cutting edge (no pun intended).
Tis amazing what google will reveal if you look!
