BOL Rail ?

Hello
This is my first post here, I spend most of my time in the historic forum, however I have what is, I’m sure, a really stupid question to all you here on the Missiles and Munitions Forum, but I would appreciate your help, I am building the airfix 1:48 617 squadron Tornado GR4 and have got to the bit about the AIM-9 sidewinder and BOL rail, my question is what the hell is a BOL rail?, what does it do?, other than hold a sidewinder onto the wing pylon, and what does BOL mean?…..ok that’s 3 questions 😀 .
Thanks in advance.
Dezz 🙂

What about a last picture?

A picture is worth one thousand words, so three pictures, three thousand words?

BOL-IR MJU-52B

Good afternoon, it’s good to back on this forum after one year with no posting!

About the BOL-IR, the chaffs are not cut when launched but the length is determined before.

Concerning the cryo bottle, I’m not sure it’s made to provide an extra cooling, I thinked it was a replacement for the bottle located normally in the launch rail, since the link between the rail and the body of the missile is simply too short!
I’m not sure of that and wait for some more information if someone knows…!

Thank you.

not only does the bol rail include chaff launching capability but also extra coolant for seeker heads

if you look at he back of one of those rails i think think they have large snips which might means that, if they are a sort of cutter then the chaff could be cut to length making it frequency specific…..so it only hinders those radars that you dont want to be seen by…and keeps the good guys up and running…

Thanks for those links Steve0, and the prompt response, they answer most of my questions, but does BOL stand for anything like B allistic O rdnance L auncher? That’s just a guess btw, but the only thing I can imagine it stands for, and I’d be very surprised if I’m anywhere near.
Thanks again

The main feature of the BOL rail is that it also doubles as a chaff dispenser.
I think BOL is a Swedish development so I don’t know what it stands for.
