Does it say it is actually meant to be a bomb they are getting?
Maybe it’s a canister that you can put things in it, like undeveloped film etc?
It does say “Bomb Snatching” & if you enlarge the 2nd photo it is definitely a bomb.

Perhaps the bomb is just used for weight. Maybe testing pulling something else into the air?

A similar setup was used with Army cooperation squadrons Lysanders at Sawbridgeworth, I think you are right.

Was it to test the viability of re-arming/bombing-up an aircraft without the necessity of coming into land, I wonder?
Like the water bombers, a rolling pick-up saves a lot of time.
