UK gives 180 mln pounds to Bombardier offshoot

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain agreed on Friday to invest up to 180 million pounds ($339.3 million) in the Northern Ireland subsidiary of Canada’s Bombardier to establish it as a supplier for the parent company’s new family of airliners.

The agreement is subject to a formal decision by Bombardier, the world’s third-largest civil aircraft maker to launch the program, the government said.

“Government backing for this program, which marks a new era for Bombardier, is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to ensuring that aerospace companies operating in the UK remain at the forefront of the industry,” Trade and Industry Secretary Alan Johnson said in a statement.

Officials said the money would allow Bombardier Aerospace Belfast (BAB) to act as a supplier to the new 110-130 seat CSeries family of airliners and would generate up to 3,200 jobs — 1,700 directly and around 1,500 in the company’s supply chain.

“The work packages to be awarded to BAB will see the company return to the highly specialized production of aircraft wings and create a center of excellence at Belfast for aircraft wing manufacture,” Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain said.

“The new jobs will make a significant contribution toward the social and economic well-being of Northern Ireland.” ($1=.5305 Pound)

Great news for the UK Aviation industry. Shame Belfast wont build the actual aircraft though

Would need major development at the plant as its across a small river type thing (there is a bridge but only HGV width) before cutting across a car park full of old busses that arnt moving in near future before getting to the Airport!

Airbus Wings were already made in Broughton in Flintshire WALES, before any Goverment Loans. Wing production started there in 1972 with the A300, still in production today.

Very good news for the C series wing.

We (as in UK/GB) must be very good at making wings, Airbus in Cheshire (I think :)) and now Bombardier in Belfast!

Well without UK grants (which are mainly English) to Airbus UK it wouldn’t have come to Wales in the first place!

MME said Cheshire, Broughton is in Wales, and yes the UK sadly

All told, the C-Series programme is valued at £1.07bn, but the plan is for Shorts to secure £600m of the total workload.

That would involve the company in the design and manufacture of the wing, engine nacelles and tail units of the new aircraft.

If this is true then Shorts would have the largest part to play in the CSeries programme with a workshare of 56%.

fightingirish,
We used to, not sure if we still do, but get regular AN124s transporting fueslage parts to Canada from Belfast. They were transported by road from Bombardier beside City Airport, to Aldergrove and flown out.

Hopefully a few more AN124 visits then 😀

Bombardier’s Belfast plant in Northern Ireland has also been chosen as the preferred site for the development of the wings, engine nacelles and composite empennage structures.

Great news for Northern Ireland!!!
I wonder, how the wings will transported for final assemble to Montreal.
I presume by sea transport.
