Bomber Command Memorial – Further Vandalism?

Is this old news just catching up? Or a new attack on the memorial?

I’d rather delete the thread than let this line of discussion continue.

I was away yesterday and missed all this. I don’t want to see this important thread deleted by the OP so have done some tidying.

This is not censorship in any way, but to try and skew a thread about the vandalism of a WW2 memorial by a native white Brit into a ‘How long until the Muslims take over?” is off topic and unacceptable.

No problem Denis, pleased to assist. 🙂

Just back from photographing the new Balloon Anniversary plaque in Nottingham – that won’t be relevant for the ukniwm!!

Denis,

Depending on the efficiency of your local ‘volunteers’ you may find that you’ve already been surveyed; you can check through this site http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/ 🙂

Re 33

Denis have you thought about recording the details of your memorials on the National Archive at the Imperial war Museum?

They like to have a photo, the location (postcode and description of location) and the wording on the memorial.

The idea of the National Archive is to record all the efforts of individual builders and placers and put them onto a national record and database.

No “They” do not have the resources to repair such damage. The local council were reluctant to get involved ( although did eventually) , but the current guardians of the memorial, the RAF benevolent fund ( RAFBF), who took over from the BCA as guardian, had to request and separately raise monies to cover the repairs.

Thank you for correcting me David. As builders of two small memorials on former airfields, we maintain a Thousand pounds or so in a bank account specific for such eventualities. I mistakenly thought a prominent memorial such as this would have a similar arrangement.

One tiny positive from this thread, is that it made me go to the Bomber Command Memorial Website and donate £20.00.

It’s the least I could do.

“I expect they wonder why they bothered. It is a source of wonderment to me how the more questionable contributors to these forums can remain silent and without apparent condemnation. They know who they are. “

John,
I think you have voiced the thoughts of many.

This defacing war memorials makes me ashamed to be a part of this world we live in today, I wonder how, the few remaining “heroes” that served in Bomber Command feel when they see such disgraceful acts.

They undoubtably have the resources set aside to repair such damage, and the means to fund the remedy. This is not the first time, nor will be the last time it will occur unfortunately.

Its a sign of the times and alas the lack of respect from all quarters, its about education and to that end what we have seen this weekend with the soil being brought to our shores for a special memorial garden, I hope will keep it at the fore and with luck might stop the bad people amongst us from doing such heinous things against the memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. To them I will always give thanks for the freedom we all now enjoy and which was so hard fought for.

I’d love to know if an identical sentence would be handed down to any individual scrawling a message on the memorial celebrating the unfortunate soldiers murder?

Building a memorial on an derelict airfield would result in it being vandalised in very short time. That is what we were told in no uncertain terms when planning the memorial at Hunsdon. It has been there eight years so far with no incidents. But it is a factor that influenced us when we built it. We cannot prevent it, for those that have the intent, would carry out acts of vandalism regardless.

No doubt the possibility of this happening to such a prominent and important monument was taken into consideration by the designers and planners of the Bomber Command memorial. They undoubtably have the resources set aside to repair such damage, and the means to fund the remedy. This is not the first time, nor will be the last time it will occur unfortunately.

Perhaps tattooing “cretin ” on his forehead (if he has one) would be more suitable.

It wouldn’t cost a great deal of money to set up some decent CCTV at the memorial.
What they have at the moment seems next to useless.

I do hope they don’t end up having to erect railings.

Undoubtedly if we were in 1960s’ Britain he might have had his wish come true ! I am sure some understand the sentiment – the location not!
