Bomber Command Memorial, Green Park, London

Hi All

I don’t post often, well, in truth, hardly at all. But today, my birthday, 4TH JULY, da-dah!!!!!! I received a very welcome and special happy birthday message from you.

Thank you.

Things are very tight here financially with my partner/fiance having been off work since March. So it’s a frugal birthday, as they say. And it was all the more special to have something unexpected … like your missive coming suddenly in my email.

THANK YOU again.

Has anyone been watching coverage of BOMBER COMMAND MEMORIAL in Green Park, London, 28th June? Was anyone lucky enough to be there?????

As Secretary of the RAF 100 Group Association and Editor of the Association magazine, ‘Confound & Destroy’; it is headline news, with us at least, because arrangements for the event have been appalling. Veterans who waited all these years to be recognised had to cancel arrangements because they find too late they will be denied entry without a ticket. Under Bomber Command through the war, they sustained the highest number of casualties, and yet have been completely denied by this country …. until now. Vets coming from abroad were given VIP treatment. I’ve heard from those arriving from Canada and Australia even arrived in a special Government VIP aircraft, shown the sights on arrival, staying in the best hotel … all free of charge. Here, in Britain, vets and their families and friends were restricted, not just by finance and not knowing they had to have a ticket to gain entry, but despite their courage and determination against the odds all those years ago, remain forgotten heroes. Churchill, in his after-war speech, completely ignored the part they played. And Bomber Harris, nicknamed ‘Butcher Harris’ became the scapegoat.

I’m sorry … I’m having a rant. But I feel so angry on their behalf. I am passionate about the Association and its people. We live today because of them, because people like my mother’s wartime fiance who served in 192 Squadron under RAF 100 (Bomber Support) Group gave his life for his country.

Has anyone else any thoughts on this?

I’d be happy to hear them.

And thanks again for giving me such a wonderful birthday surprise!

Best wishes all
Misty Blue
