Well, I thoroughly enjoyed that!

Yes, I too thought that they were a bit quick to dismiss the Stirling and the Halifax, especially with the Hallybag being such a worthy second-placed bomber after the Lanc.

They did kind of make it sound as if the young crew would be all alone with Sally B, though clearly that won’t be the case!

I wonder if they will get to have a trundle around in NX611? Would be nice to see the prospective pilots getting a feel on her first- but maybe the insurance/small space at East Kirkby would preclude that, though.

Great to see John Romain on there.

Not so many veterans and their stories on there just yet, but I seem to remember the first episode of Spitty Ace started off in a similar way, concentrating more on the modern day aircrew.

I thoroughly enjoyed the programme, I’m pretty sure they cut a shot in of the B17 wing into a sequence of the CWH Lanc.

I just wish they would not keep repeating over and over that one crew member will be flying the Lanc.

Otherwise excellent with some superb air to air shots.

Absolutely not, the Halifax was a most reliable and versatile aircraft, the man was speaking through a hole in his bomb bay :diablo:

Apart from that, it was a great programme. Can’t wait for next week. I sent in an application when they were looking for participants for the programme but I was too old 🙁 Looks like they picked a great bunch of recruits though, will be watching their progress with interest.

Here I am spouting my mouth off without having seen the programme – so I don’t know what may or may not have been said – but my 2c worth.

I understand the Mks 1 and 2 Halifaxes were not really up to form – but I don’t think it was an issue of reliability so much as performance (speed, climb rate, and especially altitude). However the Mk 3 was a great aircraft, the Hercules engines in particular (and to a lesser degree the streamlined, lighter nose and revised tailplanes) transformed the aircraft and it became every bit a match for the Lancaster. In fact I’ve heard that of the few bods who flew both operationally, many preferred the (later) Halifax. Reflect also that you never hear anything negative about the MkII Hercules engined Lanc.

I wonder if this programme will make it down under?

The first telly I have watched in ages (other than the programe before it ) and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Are they really going to be flying Sally B alone as a novice crew ? or is that just telly hype.
I did not hear the narrator mention that the Lanc they viewed was NX611 not PA474, and that the other airworthy aircraft was in Canada. A bit nit picky I know but it might give the illusion that they had access to both the worlds airworthy Lancs during the filming as when they are filmed with the BBMF it will clearly be a different aircraft.

I think it hit all the right buttons – lovely shots of the aircraft, intersting participants, poignant reminiscing by the vets. I’ll definitely be tuning in for the rest.

Just managed to catch a snippet of it on “Richard and Judy”, with two of the “crew” on it (pilot, I’m presuming, and one of the gunners).

If it elicits half the response that “Spitfire Ace” did, it should be good!

Really looking forward to this one- saw an ad for it yesterday, complete with a great shot of FM213 taking off, apparently filmed from the top of her tailplane or similar?!

If it’s half as good as ‘Spitfire Ace’, we’re in for a treat, methinks.
