Bones of Contention (Merged).

I wondered how long it would be before someone pulled the Andy Saunders bannning thread. Draw your own conclusions from it. I have!

That is good news. It’s good that the lingering doubts as to Andy’s behaviour and character can now (rightly) be dismissed. One of my major concerns was the imputation of wrongdoing (beyond accidental duplication of a forum identity) and the damage to character – a potentially actionable offence.

And we can all draw what conclusions we like from the fracas. Clearly quite a few emphatic statements have been proven incorrect… It would be nice to believe people acting on principle had an effect – certainly it developed more interest than would otherwise be the case.

Incidentally, there is no right to free speech on a privately owned forum; one can but hope that the owners feel that is a principle worth upholding nevertheless. Free speech and principle is something that has to be fought for continually.

Meanwhile I’ve been delighted to learn (I presume) I’m on Junk Collector’s ignore list. (Why? Oh, he can’t hear me! 😀 )

Progress maybe, but still no real explanation about why Andy was banned in 2007 …… if it was as suggested by some that he was banned for his comments on the attempts to recover a Battle Of Britain pilot from his crash site then I still feel very concerned about that !

That brave pilot & many others died so we can enjoy freedom of speech in this country!

As for me, well after I was banned for being rude to the head mod (is that possible of me) I just carried on posting there because I had five other identities saved up for such an eventuality…

Dear Forum users,

Forum user Tangmere was banned, in 2007, from using any part of this Forum on a permanent basis. He returned to the Forum posting as Tangmere1940 some time later in clear contravention to the Forum Guidelines, posting whilst still subject to the original ban. Recently, during a periodic check, I noticed this violation and in accordance with the guidelines, correctly, enforced the outstanding ban. I have received several requests that Tangmere1940 have his ban overturned. Taking into consideration that Tangmere1940 has recently been an active member of the Forum, remaining within the bounds of the guidelines, I am pleased to approve these requests and have reinstated Tangmere1940’s access privileges. I hope that this decision will go to further enhance the use of the forum for all users.

I also take this opportunity to thank all of you who shared your thoughts with me over this, and other matters. I am always pleased to receive suggestions.

Webmaster.

Indeed, if we had to post a list of who got banned and for what, you’d have a veeeeerrrrrrryyyyyy long list of spambots. (500+). It would just bore you all to death… The other bans are quite rare.

I would personally like to see a banned/suspended sticky thread where the reasons why any members who get banned/suspended could be published. It seems at the moment there is no way of telling who is banned and who is not. It’s open and fair that we should see these reasons,(Not the particular details of), perhaps as a warning to us that others do get banned or suspended for their actions, also in all other things in life we know why we get punished/fined/imprisoned so is it not unreasonable to ask for more openness and to be treat more like adults from key? Incidentally I’m staying as it’s still the best aviation forum I go on

No, with all due respect I think this is a bad idea. I have seen a forum go rapidly downhill when the admin team were away and spambots were registering about 1 every ten minutes because the sign up process allowed them all in. It took quite a while for the webmaster to clear out the spammers when he got back and reset the sign-up process and I suspect that the majority of names on the banned list here are spammers.

I also fear that many people seem to think that a forum like this is some kind of democracy and that the will of the majority prevails. Having been banned from another forum (the official Kylie Minogue board since you ask) I know that a) the owning organisation has very little interest in what goes on unless there is adverse publicity which can impact on their business model and b) they can do what they like as owners without having to explain anything to anybody. Even the mods. On kylie.com we had an outbreak of gay porn being posted whilst the new Mr Admin was away on his holidays. It took a while to get through to the right person but when I pointed out the potential negative publicity from what was being posted on their site and under their (and her) name they couldn’t move fast enough. However, complain to EMI about the dictatorial nature of their mods? Couldn’t care less and eventually gave up responding to emails.

As for me, well after I was banned for being rude to the head mod (is that possible of me) I just carried on posting there because I had five other identities saved up for such an eventuality…

But hey, in the end it’s just a forum and I (and all of you) have a real life outside of here.

We must respect the decision of those who have left voluntarily, and not exert any pressure on them to return…

Yes, i for one would like to keep my ignore list empty

Also, if re-instatement does occur, does this mean we’ll see a “U-turn” on the (seemingly harsh) way that Andy has been treated, perhaps facilitating J.D.K.’s eventual return ? 😀

It won’t be long now

The original, original thread was pulled.

Then this original thread was taken from Historic and put onto GD.

Then this original thread was merged (watered down) and renamed.

It won’t be long now. Baz

`

When something seemingly as trivial as being banned from an internet forum has a tangible effect on someone’s reputation and livelihood
( see post #254 ), then clearly that can’t go unchallenged……
.This thread is obviously going to run and run.

I`m sorry but this is getting ridiculous.

The whole situation is beyond a joke,

`

Having personally followed this ‘thread’ (Eel) since it “erupted” & having watched it be named, re-named, & shifted from Historic to G.D. = only to be re-named YET AGAIN, could someone be kind-enough (in amongst all this madness) to enlighten me as to WHERE & under WHICH-NAME I might be likely to find this thread on Tuesday night/Wed’s morning ???????????

Also, if re-instatement does occur, does this mean we’ll see a “U-turn” on the (seemingly harsh) way that Andy has been treated, perhaps facilitating J.D.K.’s eventual return ? 😀

Must admit; I DID think (last-week) like Baz/Spitfireman & Merlin-Madness that this “thread” (debacle) MIGHT get “swept under the carpet”, but I’ll (begrudgingly) applaud you-guys for keeping this “sounding-board” open
:diablo:

I’m sure you’d all love leafing through the hundreds of viagra / tool enlargement / porn / dodgy software / etc etc bans in order to see the one or two members of any substance whatsoever who get banned each year.

Haven’t you got enough stickies already?

Do you really think that all we mods do is thwart good honest contributors in their desire to post here?

😡

No longer pissed off. (But could be – don’t push me right now – ok?)

Ah Sorry it seems i have struck a nerve, I talked about being treat as an adult, and your reply is in red, Strange. Perhaps I shouldn’t suggest anything anymore. The suggestion was nothing more than what i would personally like. As peter has replied it is a negative anyway. Thanks

As I said before, I have looked out of the back door of the Forum and it is littered, nay piled high to the rafters, nay overflowing as far as the eye can see with names and dead bodies. The Mods wield a fiercesome weapon with dire consequences to those who cross their path and they give lessons to traffic wardens on productivity quotas!:D
