Book on the Lincoln

The recent thread on the switch unit which may have been used on the Lincoln makes me realise how little I know about this aircraft compared to the Lancaster!

Can anyone recommend any good books on the Lincoln. I’m particularly interested in technical information on the aircraft and its systems, photographs showing the crew stations and so on, as opposed to lists of squadrons it flew with.

Many thanks,

Andy

“….. The kind of detail you are seeking is unlikely to be in any of the books already listed. ….”

A bit curious, but is this comment based on what AndyY has written in his opening post, or is it based on off-forum discussions that those of us here aren’t privvy to?

If based on the opening thread-post, then the Stewart Wilson book-azine contains:
– discussion on the plans to start production in Australia;
– details on the technical development to modify the standard Lincoln Mk2 bomber into the Mk31 MR patrol aircraft;
– GA drawing of crew positions in an exploded cut-a-way format;
– GA drawing of access hatches & inspection panels;
– Chapters on operational history;
– in usual Stewart Wilson manner – a great deal of use has been made of NAA archive material to discuss production set-up costs, etc.

Based on the opening thread-post, I would have said that a combination of the Stewart Wilson book-azine and the SAM publications book on the “Manchester, Lancaster & Lincoln” would have provided a great deal of information on the Lincoln’s technical history, layout and development.

As for “systems” discussion, the Stewart Wilson book-azine does discuss the H2S radar in the RAAF MR version being able to “pick-up the return from a snorkel” but there is not a huge amount of other “systems” coverage.

But again, it depends on what you’re really looking for in terms of Lincoln technical information.

Good luck in your search,

Mark 12,

Perhaps you ought to produce more books based on your photographic archive? Maybe like the wrecks and wrelics series, only by years or decades?
Just a thought….

“The breakers in action at Lindholme, Yorks, 18 July 1957.”

Many thanks A.M.

So precise…and totally wrong. The image was actually taken at International Alloys scrap yard in Aylesbury, Bucks circa 1958 by Peter Arnold.

A 70 odd mile round trip cycle ride from Harrow/Northolt with my pal on the extreme of our operational radius, also taking in the fantastic wrecks at Halton. We visited several times.

I still have the negatives. 🙂

The caption in “Lincoln at War” is “The breakers in action at Lindholme, Yorks, 18 July 1957.” The image is credited to C.S. Waterfall.

Hendon probably is your best bet unless you have a reader’s ticket for The National Archives, as both facilities have copies of the AP?

I wish the RAFM had a scheme whereby “Joe Public”, wishing to view specific documents could make an arrangement to view them at Cosford rather than having to make the trip down to London. I suggested it once and got an “unenthusiastic” response.

Great photo Mark 12! I think it is in the book but I don’t recall the caption.

A photograph from my youth.

I believe it was used in ‘Lincoln at War’. Can anybody confirm…and advise the caption.

Air Ministry, I’m sure you’re right, the sort of detail I’m interested in just doesn’t appear in books aimed at ‘Joe Public’. But where could I get copies of those AP’s? Probably Hendon is the only source, and I’d like my own copies to study at leisure…………

I’d agree with Air Ministry, though the NAA link posted by ozjag was also very interesting.

The kind of detail you are seeking is unlikely to be in any of the books already listed.

I think your best bet is probably AP No. 2847A & B Vol I, the Lincoln BI & BII,

There is a “magazine-book” “LINCOLN CANBERRA & F-111 IN AUSTRALIAN SERVICE” by Stewart Wilson. It covers the Lincoln both as a bomber and maritime patrol aircraft in RAAF service. Out of print since about the late 1990s, you can still find good condition copies on-line or on etc-bay.

Not sure about the link, works ok for me. On the right hand side you can either download a pdf or view online.

No.34 in the Warpaint series of books is on the Lincoln. Author is Tony Buttler.

Also, the SAM Publications modeller’s book on the Lancaster, covers the Lincoln (and Manchester too). Datafile No.4

A couple of years ago I paid to have some Aussie Lincoln documents digitised, they are now available for free if you are interested, link below. There is some boring stuff such as minutes but also a few tech drawings and photos.

‘Lincoln at War 1944-1966’ by Brian Goulding would be my recommendation.
