Sure it was locked when I posted this  Think im going mad or somthing……

It’s worth considering. 😎

I certainly didn’t lock the thread at any time, and I can’t see any sign of another moderator having done so either.

(I would have posted this on the other thread but it was locked before I had a chance)

Are you sure? The other thread has not been locked out, just GA doing his moderator thinggy of keeping things to the initial subject, that is all…:)

But can anyone recommend other decent reads to do with the industry?

Yes, have you tried these:

EasyJet: The Story of England’s Biggest Low-cost Airline:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/EasyJet-Englands-Biggest-Low-cost-Airline/dp/1845132475/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221042418&sr=1-1

Go: An Airline Adventure:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Go-Airline-Adventure-Barbara-Cassani/dp/0751535605/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221042481&sr=1-1

Blue Streak: Inside jetBlue, the Upstart that Rocked an Industry:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-Streak-jetBlue-Upstart-Industry/dp/B000NO1CO6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221042553&sr=1-3

Nuts!: Southwest Airlines’ Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nuts-Southwest-Airlines-Business-Personal/dp/1587991195/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221042593&sr=1-2

Out of all of these, I would have said the book about Go by Barbara Cassani was the one I enjoyed the most!

I remember reading something on Internet about a F8 crusader?, whose pilots ejected, and made a long solo fly until belly landing on a farm. but don’t remember where I read it

in one book on hunters, there’s a tale of an aircraft getting into difficulties on approach to landing, the pilot abandoned ship, and the aircraft made a good, wheels up landing on the airfield by itself. and i’m not sure, but they may even have got it serviceable again.

Not an unmanned landing but an unmanned take-off. A BA Swallow took off after the pilot swung the prop himself. It managed to fly very well until shot down by a pair of FAA Sea Furies! This would have been around 1947 … the reg is quoted in AJJ’s “British Civil Aircraft” but its up in my study and I’m in the kitchen at the moment!

It’s not a book, but if you go to the site
http://www.samoloty.ow.pl/amiap/
and select
“Bezzalogowe ladowanie” (“Unmanned landing”) or “Bezzalogowe ladowanie – epilog” (“Unmanned landing – epilogue”) you will get a story of a B-17 that was hit by Flak, abandoned by the crew and then flew on for some 150 miles, belly landing in field in nice condition. The text is all in Polish, but you can contact the author, Szymon Serwatka, who speaks/writes good English.

P/O Prune quite right.

I have Famous Bombers… (1st Vol.), ditto Famous Fighters (which went into at least six impressions) and Second series (ie Vol. 2) of Famous Fighters… (all pub by Macdonalds)
I also have Second Editions of both each of which appear to be combination of vols. 1 and 2. Famous Fighters… pub by Purnell and Famous Bombers…. pub by Macdonald and Janes.
All the contents (although listed at the front) are in no particular order.

There were some on ebay last week but I didn’t take much notice which they were.

Macdonald also did a series of pocket size books which went to at least ten vols. and were set out country by country then in alphabetical order. Vols 1 – 4 Fighters, 5 Flying Boats, 6 Floatplanes, 7 – 10 Bombers and reconnaissance.

These would be by William Green, Published by Macdonald in the late 1950’s,early sixties, and come in 2 volumes each. They are about 10 x 8 and have about 120+ pages. Some smaller pocket sized versions were later produced in the late sixties and had just one or two countries aircraft in each. They should be quite easy to find and cheap, try Midland Counties publications, they have a massive stock of used books.

RE: Books

Your collection is almost the size of mine – almost. My collection is mostly aviation related but I have a lot other naval and general military stuff too, and a LOT of videos. How are you going for storage??

Regards, Glenn.

RE: Books

Loads. Apart from the bound Flypast books, most of my stuff is all reference. As well as these two, I’ve got another 3 bookcases all full of aviation related stuff and am getting in dire need of a mass sort out. Anybody recommend a good bookshop ?

Cheers

Gary

RE: Books

I use Jet Airliner production List vol 1(Boeing) and 2(General)and as I’m a reg. spotter, Airlines to Europe (although I find this a bit limited) and the occasional Aviation Letter. But I’m always on the look out for other books, Thanks for that Andrew, I’ll look out for that book next time I’m at LHR.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-10-02 AT 09:32 PM (GMT)]Hiya Dave. The vital guide book that I have, I purchased for LHR viewing roof shop at £9.99, but it is sold in W H Smiths too at the same price, and it is written by a guy called Gunter Endres.

The other book that I mentioned, the ATC abbreviations, i got free with my air band radio.

Hope this helps a little Dave. 🙂
