Boscombe Down Aviation Collection updates

I know for some time the BDAC has been seeking a more suitable home for it’s fleet of historic aircraft and over the last couple of days I’ve seen several articles confirming a new home 4 (and a bit) miles south at Old Sarum airfield.

I’m not sure of the exact date of the move but I’m sure it is very recent, I’m determined to get down there asap and take plenty of photos…! 😀

In Salisbury yesterday as I went into a second hand/old furniture shop in the doorway stood a Hunter nose cone. It had ‘NASA’ in large letters and in small ‘Hunter GA11’ but the glass window ports made it look more like one from a FR10.
Got home and googled and it is obviously the one removed from XF375 which now sports a proper F6 nose and looks superb.

That would be a good idea Tony…
As a general observation…the grey Phantom was transported to suffolk some weeks ago – the ripple Phantom has had its wing separated from the fuselage but was still sitting at BD a week or so ago…

New gate guard at Aviation Museum

I can understand why cockpit visits are rare !!
One of my special memories is of being accosted after entering the Solent Sky museum (or whatever it was called then :D) by a well known ex Wing Commander Sunderland pilot who said…”would you like to go up to the flight deck ? ” and spending a good hour up there chatting about flying etc 😀

Indeed so Baz. It always disappoints me how museums especially the larger ones spend thousands of pounds and man hours on restoring a cockpit, for no-one to ever get to see it – even from outside the cockpit window !

Forgot to say that the staff were very friendly and that it is a great place for kids (of all ages :D)…cockpit access is positively encouraged – which is extremely unusual for aircraft museums !!

I believe the plan is to fit one of their nice complete Jaguar forward fuselages to the rear of ‘734 to make a whole Jag. The wing is present too though badly hacked around. Having said that you only have to look at the job they did with their SHAR to see what can be achieved! Well done to the museum for saving this Jaguar from the scrap-man.

Great museum when I visited for the first time during the aerojumble. Thought it was fantastic that the cockpits were open for inspection. One oddity is that the Link trainer appears to be fitted with a Vickers Viking yoke (minus its brake levers!)

What state is Jaguar GR.1 XX734 in and does she have a specific connection with Boscombe Down?
