Hi all
I bought a Spitfire Propeller from a antique dealer the other day and received this morning
But its too big
I bought this for display for shows and would really like to know what its from
looks identical to a jablo spitfire prop but its too big in my mind
measures 5’3 inches high and the bottom screw is near on 6 inches in diameter and bigger than the spit prop screw I have here
I will keep trying to read these numbers at base of propeller
Not sure how to put picture on here, so heres a link to it via my old web site https://sites.google.com/site/northviewcrafts/photos?pli=1
I think number on base are RA406RS
RA and RS for certain but the numbers I only think as hard to read

Canβt help you with RA406 but here are a few possibilities for right handed props with similar numbers.
RA4060 Whitley
RA4065 & RA4067 Hurricane

very nice pens! Would rather have had one of those than my more expensive long service pen!!

are you going to be at legends?…id love to by a pen made from a broken prop.

I think if you follow the OP’s link the intention is to turn the blade into pens.

Absolutely not for making pens
This is for display only at all the shows we do, and will be displayed first at Royal Highland Show in four weeks
Come along and see and maybe buy a pen at the same time π
I would not cut up a complete propeller and make pens.
We only use broken and damaged propellers

They do some superb pens too… you should have seen the RR Spit prop after its ground strike, it was reduced to shards lol, bar the odd blade that broke free reasonably intact.. but most of it fitted nicely in a bucket.

I hope you identify it. In any case, it is beautiful to see the wood…a nice rub with flour paper and then French polish would see it a treat.

To identify blades prior to final finish and stencil, Dowty Rotol stamped the base.
Here is a Spitfire blade RA10046 RTS.
It is 60.5″ base to tip.

Martin a little flour might work also, self raising or plain π or try taking a rubbing with a bit of paper and a pencil π

The only markings ive found are the ones on the base diameter.
I will try the chalk trick tomorrow as damp cloth and torch just don show clear enough
I don’t think this is relevant, but will mention anyway
Underneath the plastic on top tip written in pencil 804 and maybe followed by another 8 and followed un readable writing

No, not on the steel screw, on the base diameter of the wood on to which the steel adaptor is screwed. Stamped in to the wood.

cant find anything on steel screw
Ok will try chalk, but none in house so have to get some tomorrow
Thanks all for help here, its appreciated

Get a bit of chalk and rub it into the stampings then wipe off… It makes reading difficult stamped letters easy π
I do the same with drill bits.

Try looking at the at the very base of the blade, the diameter visible looking end on the steel adaptor. Any type reference here?
The blade certainly has the subtle profile of the Mk IX Spitfire blade…but is about three inches too long.

Thanks very helpful
The letters are definite
The numbers clearly 4 & 6 and what looks like 0 with gaps I just cant read
Below these markings is also RW?58 I believe also stamped but so so faint

The drawing number for four bladed Spit props is RA 10046 RTS or RS. Five bladed were RA 10167 RTS or RS and IIRC the Mk.V is RA 690 RS. RA 406 RS might be Hurricane but thats just me making a wild guess. I suspect it may just be a badly stamped or weathered ‘10046’

I guess I could be wrong, but it looks mighty similar! It was cancelled on 8 May
If you dont want it anymore, happy to give it a home!

That’s interesting thank you
Maybe its been doing the rounds and being pushed as a Spitfire Prop ???
Any one have any ideas what aircraft this has come from?
Its was intended as show display but now having second thoughts

ah ha – I was high bidder on this then it disappeared off Ebay with my bid cancelled – happens more often nowadays!
It was certainly sold on eBay back in March by an antiques dealer from Stoke on Trent, but it could have gone through another dealer since maybe?
