Hi all
Operations commence next week with the first introductory course of 2012. Two Mk IXTs this year, as well as the Harvards, Chipmunk and Tiger Moth. All aircraft arriving over the next few days (assuming Goodwood dries out enough…)
Fantastic that Spitfires once more to be based at the former RAF Westhampnett.

G-ILDA and G-CCCA, loaned from Arco.
Thought one of them may have been “The original 2 seater” T8, MT818 i think, seeing as the owner has a connection with goodwood !!

Good luck to all concerned, as has been said, we are just stewards of these great a/c. I’m extremely lucky to have a two seat Spit in our hangar and still have one of those ‘wow’ moments every time I open the doors. It has a combat record (in it’s original Mk IX form) and has what can only be described as a presence.

Oxford is a great venue but the north-south runway was not ideal and towards the end of last year they were refusing to allow run in and breaks, which is an important part of the experience for the students.
And for onlookers! Well, that’s a great pity for me, but I wish you the very best down at Westhampnett.
Managed a Spitfire fix today – I think it must have been coming from Abingdon airshow, judging by the various things coming over – favourite comment of the day as the OV10 Bronco trundled back eastwards “It looks as though it’s still got training wheels on!”

Curious response.
What the others said. Irony.
The original Vickers Supermarine canopy will hopefully improve the view from the rear seat.
I wouldn’t worry.
The aeroplane has profound connections with Goodwood. It is not a crime to remember the sad fact, or the people who were flying it.

I’ve many fond memories doing my Flying Scholarship at Goodwood back in 1988; being downwind in the circuit behind 407, rushing outside to watch her depart or arrive and helping to push her back in the hangar as she was still “tinking” on cool down. Also chatting to Nick about the Pilatus P2 and him saying what a cow it was to land (and having experienced it myself I have to agree…) and was therefore perfect for learning about the Buchon. It will be lovely to think of the sound of Merlins in the circuit again.
Ah, and then enjoying a low level clatterpast in a CH47 whilst the first ac I solo’d in (-KH) was bashing the circuit (having somehow survived my hamfisted attempts to land her many years previously…).
Happy days…best of luck to this new venture..and if only those numbers come up!!

I am sure its a base-less rumour, but it has been said that people only buy the one car or take the one flight with you, old chap! :dev2::p
On the other hand, I think I bought three cars from you and flew with you quite often. But then….some people just never learn, do they?! :diablo:

Does His Grace know that you are selling Goodwood House on e-bay? Do you not think he will mind?
Oh ! Andy, didn’t ye know…His Grace and I have always had a close affinity..don’t ye know. I used to sell him all his horseless carriages at one time…or should I say, just the one time… Hmmmmmmm..splutter…Offered to fly him over his house once…he didn’t turn up…can’t think why

That, isn’t the irony, in anycase it doesn’t have to be bad to be ironic.
There’s nothing ironic about a repaired aircraft returning to it’s former base.
I think it’s all rather the way of things – we’re just stewards of these great aircraft, I hope very much that Spitfires are being flown from wartime bases long after I head off to bluer skies:)

I’d never seen a pic of G-BOML and ML407 together before now. Thanks for that.

I was there with Nick Grace and the immortal pair, OUV & BOML. Sad days when Nick was so tragically killed after leaving my office that awful night…and then again shortly after, when G-BOML crashed, taking the life of Mark Hanna……………….:(
Still, better days since, with the Goodwood revival meeting and the flight of 10 Spitfires, and now not just one, but TWO Spits plus all the entourage and training……I know of a nice house for sale quite near the end of 24L…..deposits by Pay Pal only please !!!!!!

Having been fortunate enough to fly in PV202 from Goodwood in its previous life (only a matter of weeks before the tragic incident at Goodwood) and to have taken the controls from Selsey Bill to Beachy Head I am personally pleased to see it back at Goodwood. I knew as a passing acquaintance one of those lost in that incident, and by bizarre coincidence had been rescued by him in a FAA Wessex just a few years previously. I happen to think he’d be pleased to see PV202 back there, too. Just my view.

Irony? Just rather poor taste in my book.
By: knifeedgeturn - 6th May 2012 at 13:17
I suppose it could read like that, (and he may even have meant it to read like that) but there is a deep sense of irony here.
