Bournemouth Aviation Museum Reopens

Yesterday saw the official reopening of the Bournemouth Aviation Museum at its new site at Adventure Wonderland next to Bournemouth Airport. The reopening was carried out my the Mayor of Christchurch and accompained by a flypast from locally based Percival Pembroke G-BNPH.
The museum reopens its doors to the public today at 1000. This marks the end of nearly 12 months work by all involved to reopen the museum after the end of its lease on its former site on the airport, and hopefully will lead to bigger and better things in the future.

This site has some videos of the Leopard in flight and an engine startup with sound. These are from a CMC promotional CD.

http://www.machdiamonds.com/leopard.html

This is some information about the two airframes

LEOPARD s/n-002 G-BRNM. Airframe complete and airworthy less engines. Fitted with Bendix-King EFIS-40 and Gold Crown avionics. Built 1997, last flown 2001 UK B-conditions (Experimental).

LEOPARD s/n-001 G-BKRL. Airframe complete and in good condition, less engines. Last flown 1994 UK Permit (Experimental).

(This is a bit out of date though)

Remember seeing it at Farnborough and talking to the creator, who at the time lived in Cornwall.

Dunno if Ian C Miles is any relation to Fredrick G Miles, could be.

Now if the Leopard is a beut all that is needed is a lot of time to find all the instruments, 2x NPT Trubines and a few bolts and 001 can take to the skies. (actually its a bit more that that.)

Sorry about Hi-jacking the Bournemouth Aviation Museum thread.

No worries G-ASYD, had me confused for a sec!
Why is the museum doing away with something as highly appropriate as the 1-11?
I think the CMC Leopard is a beaut, shame the idea didn’t become commercial reality.
BTW is Chichester Miles anything to do with the great F.G Miles?

isnt the one that is now at coventry air museum, the one that WAS at bournemouth?

Don’t think so …. watching South Today last night an it popped up a few times, dad certainly recognised it (as well he should he was one of the engineers) I think that the one at Bournemouth now is 001, which is slightly different from 002 which I have sen photos of at Coventry. It may be that 002 went from Bournemouth to Coventry and then 001 went from the CMC hangar to Bournemouth. I seem to remember it being in bits about 2/3 years ago at Old Sarum.

i think the leopard is a really rather attractive aircraft and would like one myself. however, isnt the one that is now at coventry air museum, the one that WAS at bournemouth?

Yep prototype number 2 if I remember correctly. Ugly looking thing in my opinion but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Thats 001 (I think) Only one in the South, should really be at Old Sarum along with an Optica.

An Aviation Museum at Bournemouth Airport without a 1-11, when one is available!!! Criminal!!!
I would scrap all the other aircraft that have nothing to do with Hurn’s history and replace them with the 1-11 G-AZMF!!!
1-11s have only been flying regularily out of Hurn for the past 45 years!!!

No further comment required!!!

how many complete examples are preserved? I know of the one at East Fortune but no others…

G-AYSD at Brooklands, G-AVMU at Duxford, must be a few more about…

The museum has reopened at Adventure Wonderland next to the airport so it’s not on the aiport any more. I am not sure of the exact number of aircraft left with the collection.

That aside, its good news that Bournemouth museum have re-opened. Are they still on airport land?

Its about time that airport authorities realised the benefits of preserving their heritage before they cover it in car parks.

Last BAC 1-11 in U.K passenger service and on display at her place of birth.
Apart from that nothing really. It’s as important to some as duplicated military types are to others – all how you perceive preservation.

BAC 1-11 G-AZMF
Flew last comercial flight of a 1-11 in Europe in 2003
Built at Bournemouth (Hurn) thus making it important to preserve it there!
What better way to show the history of the site!

A number have moved on and the Herald was chopped up and the BAC 1-11 faces an uncertain future

No uncertainty about it.

Just out of interest, why is that 1-11 so important? So much fuss has been made over it.
