Brass de Havilland Comet Racer model

I recently acquired this obviously very old brass model de Havilland Comet racer in South Africa and am trying to find out a bit more (anything!) about it.

The internet reveals that a virtually identical example (the base being the only difference) was sold on auction at some time and a similar but slightly larger chrome-plated one described as being a period commemorative car mascot from 1934 following the London-Australia race won by Campbell-Black and Clouston in G-ACSS.

I know Clouston and Betty Kirby-Green flew G-ACSS to Cape Town in November 1937 – perhaps there is a connection?

The wingspan measures some 18cm and is made from five separate parts soldered together. The patina of the brass (more copper in colour) suggests it is indeed very old.

Any information or help on this model of one of my favourite aircraft will be much appreciated!
