Brawdy VASF

Brawdy VASF was quite busy
used to get a big influx of german “Transal’s”c160s in all through summer along with all the Air training corps who used to fly the chipmunks we had
we also had a few Jet Provosts to look after as well as the 2 Meteors
had lots of Nato stuff in like F104’s loads of yank stuff too best one i remember was a A10 with a gun jammed that was fun ….for me any way as a young armourer

i was there ’84 to ’87.
whilst i’m interested in aircraft, i’ve not got any spotter in me, so hardly took any photo’s , and certainly didn’t write down ant tail numbers!:)
in those days when a fair proportion of my collegues were FLMS’s, to be caught doing anything that might have been interpreted as being a bit spotterish was to be condemned to a life of ridicule!

also it was very bussy there, and we had all sorts of stuff from all over nato, quite often old stuff you thought had gone out of service years before!
stuff like sea devons, T.33’s, beavor’s and the previously mentioned meteors.
although no one really took any notice of the old stuff, but if you had something new, flashy and american in, the pan would be heaving with spotters and student pilots!

i knew his brother at Valley a couple of years later then. Howie was from Ty Croes near Ammanford, and i used to get a lift home with him before i could drive.
they must be related as Howie was quite dark, and mediterranean looking, and i’m sure he mentioned he had a brother in as well.

i used to work on the VAS (or TAHS as it was called then) at Valley and we used to get a meteor in now and again, along with hunters, i can’t remember if they were from Brawdy or Lanbedr though.

I recognise the pilot – the infamous Flt Lt ‘Puddy’ Catt!
