I have a feeling that Phil made his final takeoff a decade or so ago, so I’d be worried if he is reading this.

Just thinking last week about the original thread starter, doubt whether he will still be reading this thread, almost twenty years later………………..

The Squadron/Signal book on the Buffalo in Action has lots of photos and line drawings of the various canopies but doesn’t have a canopy exactly as shown in your pictures, Propstrike.

The canopy on the original aircraft in Finland has a different structure to the one shown !

It has finer glazing bars and fillets at base and no upper cross bar.

Very good article by Gerard Casius on the KNIL Buffalo’s.

Brewster Buffaloes for the Militaire Luchtvaart KNIL (warbirdforum.com)

The Militaire Luchtvaart Museum in Soesterberg (Netherlands) has a replica on display.

Fates of individual aircraft: IPMS Nederland – Brewster B339 (in Dutch). A small number ended up in Japan for test flying.

Remains of two KNIL and one USAAF Buffalo’s are stored in the Netherlands. They are far from complete, (understatement).

Presently for sale, claims to be a Buffalo canopy…..?

Could it be? Looks a bit too well engineered to be a DIY lash up.

P.S.

Suspect Distillers colour pic of Buffalo in lake is the a/c in question.

Check todays Papers.

Interesting article pages 20-21 of the Independant.

Titled ‘ The Fighter Plane that would not die’

Basically is a story about the Finns efforts in getting the last surviour home from the states where it is currently headed for/under restoration.

The aircraft was ditched on Big Kali Lake 25th June ’42 by Lieutenant Lauri Pekuri a 10+victory ace (who survived). Was raised from the lake in ’88.

Cheers!

(forgive me for posting in both Buffalo Threads)

The “Dinky” Buffalo

I have managed to get hold of a few 1/72 Buffalo kits over the last few months, and have put together some examples including 3 Finnish Buffs (1 in overall aluminium – Finnish Staff Flight) as well as an RAAF and a RNZAF example and not forgetting a gaudy coloured USN model too! I’ll try and post these soon if I can suss it all out! I would love to see one of these aircraft for real, maybe 1 day I’ll get the chance!

Hi Phil,
Try this :
http://www.warbirdforum.com/buff.htm
and then under the Buffalo section you will find British Commowealth section where the link to the manual is.
or directly to :

Olivier

The aircraft was never designed for a hot climate – so the gun solenoids corroded and the engines overheated – also most of the fighting in the Finnish war was at low-level contrast the Pacific….

There is a great article in an old paperback of mine ‘The Worlds Worst Aircraft’…1970s, sounds crap, but it isnt – whether it was the worlds worst is a moot point – also included in the book are – R101, Tarrant Tabor, Gee Bee, Me163, Me363, bRABAZON, Saro Princess, and a few assorted others….
