1 – Brian was playing Chicago Blues when Clapton was still learning what cords were
2 – First British player to use a bottle neck
3 – “the finest White player I ever heard” – (Muddy Waters?)a blues legend was known to have also said Brian played with the passion only a black man could have.
4 – Founded the Godfathers of rock music themselves.

Frampton is fabulous. Ever heard him live?
Marriot was cool but by no means the greatest.

How does anyone rate Steve Marriot as a Guitarist – and nobody mentioned Peter Frampton.

I think you’ll find that the Bluesbreakers were strutting their stuff a little while before that, in fact I think they were on the same blues cicuit as the ‘Stones were before fame came along, but John Mayall being the purist he was , stepped aside for them.

for those who didnt know, Peter Green was told “you know your stepping into Claptons shoes” to which he shrugged and blew Clapton away.
And Mick Taylor replaced Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones as he was nearest Guitar player to that style – having replaced Green and Clapton.
Besides the Bluesbreakers started out in 1964, when the Stones were well established.

Yeah I’ve heard of Walter Trout, about ten years ago he was playing with John Mayalls Bluesbreakers in the UK .
In case you’ve never heard of them, The Bluesbreakers have been around since the year dot, boasting members such as Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood(Fleetwood Mac)
Trout even formed his own band while he was here,I think he also cut a couple of albums.
In the time he was with The Bluesbreakers he shared the limelight with an equally good axe man called Coco Montoya,
Unfortunately I havent heard either of these guitarists for some time , I’m not sure where they are or what they’re doing, only that Trout returned to the US a few years ago.
I’ll have a scout round the record stores and see if I can come up with anything

I wonder if you guys are familiar with Walter Trout. Ive heard hes getting some recognition over there in the UK. He was truely the best guitarist Ive ever heard. I used to see him play every week in this rowdy beer bar in Huntington Beach every weekend back in 86. Theres no words to discribe his playing. I wish to god I would have bootlegged one of his nights, I could make a mint off of it. I havent heard him lately, he still plays around southern cal.

now there’s a durable kinda guy, he doesnt seem to follow current musical trends, except maybe when he’s featuring other artistes as he did on Supernatural and Shaman albums.
The guy’s been playing that blend of latino, jazz, rock, since the sixties,
The man’s phenomonal!!
If you like instrument solos, listen to the Allman Bros. Band, a nice blend of keyboard (Greg Allman)and two lead guitarists (Duane Alllman and Dickie Betts)to listen to.
A bit of useless info for you :The former theme tune to TVs Top Gear was The Allman Bros. “Jessica” the full version is about 8 mins long.
Its one of the best instumentals I’ve heard.

I just miss the instrument solo.
There was a time…. long ago when singers could play musical instruments too.
Whether it was a guitar or a keyboard solo I miss it.
Guitarists I like include Santana, Eddie Van Halen, and that guy that played on Meatloafs “Bat out of hell” album.

I contribute to another forum on the web( www.fender.co.uk)and I posted your comments on Clapton.
The reaction was unanimous in favour of Clapton
Brian Jones was good……. at blues.
But still, in my opinion, not as good as Clapton or Peter Green.
I wonder if John Mayall would have invited Jones to play with the Bluesbreakers. I dont think so!
sorry mate, I just dont agree with your with views

Thats my whole point. Brian Jones could. And had he lived Clapton would be living in his shadow.

The guitarists on this forum might have their preferrences when it comes to rock music and rock guitarists but I dont think there’s many of them that would say Eric Clapton’s guitar playing sucks, I’m not a great fan of Clapton’s music (apart from his blues) but very few can better his ability and technique when it comes to playing blues/rock.

I wonder what recordings of Brian you have heard? you only have to listen to his solo on “she said yeah” to be convinced.
And why do people seem to think Claptons solo stuff is better than his wprk with Cream, the yardbirds, Blind Faith, and the Bluesbreakers? It sucks with the exception of a few tracks.
Besides a lot of Claptons material has been covers (and yes I know she said yeah was a cover)
Oh and the 1st Yardbirds album is ace…

RE: Brian Jones was better than Clapton – discuss, argue, agree
I first saw Clapton in 1965 when he was with Yardbirds, not long after, I saw the ‘stones with Brian jones,
I’m sorry Sadsack, but he wasn’t a patch on Clapton when came to technique.
I’ve never rated Muddy Waters as a good guitarist anyway, just an average blues player.
I suppose when a band name themselves after one of your songs you’re gonna repay the compliment, even if it aint true!!

Thats a difficult call, its very difficult to gauge the talent of people like clapton or jones if you werent part of the generation that first heard them. Im 37 which means I was only 5 years old in 1970. So Im sure that the guitare styles of clapton/jones were pioneering and ground breaking for their time, but the clapton style has become such a ingrained style for guitarists today that he actually sounds simple and uninspired to todays ears.
