My main reason for joining as a new boy to the forum is to find out if anybody can tell me what happened to Brian Stainer and also his photo’s. I started spotting at LAP (as was) in the early 50’s first from North Side at the end of the Nissen Huts, sitting on the base of the stairs watching connies come into the bay in front of me, turn & shut down – nobody bothered us, there might have been 6 in total in the bays. Central did not of course exist. When it did moved to Queens building & got to know Stan the commentator and Elizabeth his assistent and stayed in the box with them & their classical music.
Anyway got into photograpy and got to know Brian Stainer, joined BOAC & ended up in the photographic unit darkrooms in Piccadilly, even owned the Imperial airways photo collection for one time. spent more time photographing light stuff around – but does anyone else remember a C47 commando landing on No 1 runway, coming to a halt and the crew jumping out & running away. Anyway I am now scanning all my negs into the system, which made me wonder about Brian – so any news would be welcome.

I don’t know about the B+W but I believe the majority of his personal slide collection was sold to a Frenchman about 10-15 years or so ago.
Thanks for the info MrB. Brian certainly took some great photos during his career.
Cheers Brian.

Hi Mick, Yes – I reckon you’ve got it – it’s certainly scruffy enough and in camo – 1955 is about the right time – as I’ve said before, you’ve got some great sources!
Cheers Brian.

Brian could the Commando have been N68852 which was abandoned on Heathrow for weeks around 1955….I remember it near the Northern Tunnel mouth but this shows it by Fields….Mick(on the Air -Britain site abpic)

Thank you
Thank you all for the info on Brian Stainer and general welcome, when I eventually learn how to handle Adobe Photoshop etc., I will try to put some photos on here. This is a fascinating forum.
Cheers Brian.

As far as i know Brian is alive and well although he is certainly not as mobile as he once was.
A few years back he sold his entire collection of slides and Negatives, a few of which I managed to purchase. I was under the impression that the Aviation Hobby shop took the majority of the collection.

As far as I know Brian is still alive and well and still living in Feltham?Had a conversation with Tony Eastwood at the Aviation Hobby Shop a couple of months ago about Brians collection as I want to use some in my Blackbushe book.Tony says he has much of the larger aircraft photos, but not the light aircraft.

I knew Brian quite well and visited his home on several occasions.
His pet dog also followed him to many airshows such as North Weald etc.
I am pretty sure that he is still with us but has disposed of his collection.
I think Albert Ross might also know a bit more if he is still posting on the forum

Welcome Brian…………
I am sure there will be several on here who will apprieciate any images you can provide from the heyday of LHR North……..!!
I well remember Brian Stainer and his Reliant at several airshows. Always on his own with no helpers as I recollect. Who needs and Transit or a 4X4 ?!!!!!!
I too would be interested in knowing of the whereabouts of the collection or any part of it.

He used to turn up at our shows, always cheerful, in a battered Reliant Robin with a trailer! Real “Trotters International Trading” stuff!! It was (over)loaded with his stall equipmentand boxes of photos and, as I recall, even had a roof rack and the interior stuffed out with more stock, too. It took him nearly all day to set up and get out all of his stock….by which time everyone else was starting to pack up! Can’t help missing some of the aerojumble individuals. And they were certainly “individual” !

I’ve often wondered about the same thing Brian, he helped me a lot with Gannet stuff (mainly pics of course), had some cracking info.
In the days before internet, he/MAP and APN were the only sure way of buying images of what you wanted to see.
And yes please, would like to see those BOAC, IA and Heathrow pics!

Dear Brian,
Welcome to the forum! I’m sure some of your scanned photos would be most welcome here.
Brian Stainer I believe sold up the Aviation Photo News collection a few years ago now, I think, to retire. I understand that ‘Septic’ on the forum here bought a selection of some of his material – certainly not a lot of it, but may know what happened to the rest at that time. Drop him a PM (private message).
Cheers,
