Hi All,

Can anyone give any info on this data plate?
It was found by a colleague of mine while metal detecting near RAF Waddington.
The box top left has an ‘A’ with 541 below.
Box top right has ‘AN’ with ‘W263’ below.
Centre number is 2865-R.
Partial No. is -15-8489-3.
Serial No. & Date are blank.

Many thanks
Rob.

Weren’t there B-29’s at Waddington in the 50’s?
Or were they known as B-50’s then?

I’ve found that there was a mid-air collision between 2 C-47A’s at Waddington in Aug 1944. Maybe from that?

However, I’ve also found that the ‘A’ over ‘541’ inside a B (top left) relates to B-29’s ???

Page 69 of the superb “Corsair KD431 – The Time Capsule Fighter” by Dave Morris shows one of these plates as fitted to the wings of Fleet Air Arm Museum’s KD431. If this is indeed a Corsair wing then it is likely to be a starboard unit as indicated by the “R”.

Very interesting!

Today, Briggs and Stratton make small enigines…so my guess is that it’s from a piece of ground support equipment.

However, ‘AN’ could also be part of a radio/avionics designation.

You might drop them an email at : www.briggsandstratton.com
