We still don´t know if there was a real despresurization, or it was a mask malfunction. One of the few emergencies I had was taking off from STN on a charter airline B737-300, some years ago.
On climbing, the masks fell off, but we didn´t have to use them, and we landed normally shortly after. Crew told, no real despresurization.
I wonder if they were told, that descending quickly was part of the regular procedures.

As was said on the Qantas emergency thread not so long ago, a sudden depressursation and the subsequent emergency descent can be a damned terrifying experience.
It’s easy enough for those not involved to pronounce that there was little actual danger (even though they may be right) and to tut-tut about media news judgements.
But if the alternative is a Pravda-style managed news, I’d rather stick with what we’ve got, for all its faults.
Postscript: I’ve just heard the BBC Radio 4 account. By and large it took the Ryanair line, emphasising that the oxygen masks appeard to be in good working order despite the opinions of some passengers. At 25 minutes into a 30-minute bulletin, it was obviously not regarded as the most important news of the day.

Good on you MOL and shame on Pen Hadow for trying to convince the media that just because he has been for a stroll in the snow, he is qualified to say what the cabin/flight crew “should have done.” Makes you mad…..don’t it!

Again tabloid style piece of news over here. In the brink of disaster…..crash, security under threat. Bla, bla, bla. They are creating such an alarming situation over here, that I think the justice should act sometimes. Yesterday, they even dared to publish a false transcription of the Spanair crash.
I wonder why they have omitted the A320 Iberia engine fire in Wien a few weeks ago. Pilots trade union, do you have selective memory?. Or simply because Iberia controls the whole stuff.

I’m listening to this interview with a passenger and MOL himself, it all seems that in the wake of the Spanair incident in Madrid anything aviation related can make front page news on a slow day….
I’m not saying this was a minor incident but at the same time I don’t think it required to be on the front page of the BBC website. Kudos to MOL for talking to the interviewer though, it seem’s he always likes a good scrap with the media :D.
