Bristol Beaufort tail wheel

Most Beaufort in flight photos show the main gear up but the tail wheel down. Now I would have thought that it would be linked to the main gear but in any case surely it would be best raised for flight.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Probably because most photos were taken of MkIs, as – according to this website – they had retractable tailwheels from the MkII onwards. Plus, the MkI was the biggest production run by far at 1014 airframes.
