Hi All –
I thought I’d post some pix of one of my prize possessions – its a MK1 Blenheim sure, but made as a car mascot – the passenger windows may actually indicate that its Spirit of Britain First – anyway if anyone knows anthing more about it please let me know – I fell in love with it at a jumble a while ago –
The base is modern but all i could find to stop it tipping over….
Cheers

Hi James –
thanks very much for the info – jolly useful – I havent got Graham Warners book but i hear its excellent – the model is i think pretty accurate not to Wrens level of caricature but could well be ‘enhanced’ as you say- it does have the remnants of RAF roundals on the wings and fuselage but they are very faded – could have been added afterwards of course – impossible to tell, but they are certainly of some age and have virtually etched themselves into the metal….the photos dont really do it justice…also all the control surfaces are engraved together with some rib detail on the rudders elevators and ailerons…there is evidence of some black paint in the engine recesses too….
It does have metal spinning props – though one is missing, will replace it though at some stage…
Thanks again for your kind help and research….if only it could talk….!
All the best

P.S.
Phil you are forgiven – cheeky sod! 🙂

Very interesting!
It’s clearly meant to be the precursor to the Blenheim. It’s what might be called ‘semi-scale’ as it’s a bit ‘cartoony’ rather than being a strict scale replica. I wonder if the variation is looks, like Chris Wren’s ‘Wrenderings’ was to enhance the identification of it?
Bristol 142 ‘Britain First’ – Looks most like this, except for the enging naicelles not being continuous with the engine cowlings.
Bristol 143 Similar to the 142 but with smaller diamater Aquila engines – could be meant to be this rather than the 142, which would make it VERY rare.
Bristol 142M – became the Blenheim, and this isn’t it because of the low mounted wing, passenger windows and nose shape which on the model is sort of between the 142 and Blenheim designs.
My notes are from the Graham Warner book ‘The Bristol Blenheim a Complete History’ Crecy. Your library should have a copy.
Oh, on pp.142, there’s a photo captioned: Lord Rothermere holding the minature Bristol aircraft made for his car by Spinks of London.” Nah, just kidding. 😀
Either way, it’s a very interesting mascot. Well worth 60 smackers I’d think, and probably unique and made for someone important in Bristol’s or lord Rothermere…

Thanks for your input chaps!
I can only speculate as to why it was made – an advertising gimmick or Lord Rothermeres personal mascot!?
All the best

[QUOTE=Mark12]Perhaps a more appropriate base – The Bristol Blenheim.

But Texan Tomcat is right in his thought of it being a model of the Bristol 142/143 – note the low mounted wing. I’m sure Blenheim experts will confirm.
Still a beautiful object.
