Bristol Bulldog flight info

Folks,
I am looking for inforamtion on the flight characteristics of the Bulldog. The A.P. manual gets you as far as starting the engine, so of little help. I have not been able to find any airspeeds. (stall, cruise, max, landing etc). Nothing on aerobatics, (except do not slow roll near the ground). And lastly, nothing on weight and balance. Any help would be appreciated.

For those of you following the Bristol Bulldog:  Bulldog K2089 took to the skies on 27Jun22. Flew for about 15 minutes, flies nice.

Excellent to see this project nearing its first flight, I recovered the remains of Mk IIa A12-7 from the Brisbane Ranges back in 1992 where it had laid since November 1936, and so I have a great interest in the type.

Looking at the video it appears that he has pretty good brakes judging by the way the aeroplane turned  180 degrees and he was keeping a look out before he started. Anyway he has done a fantastic job of building it and I am sure he knows what he’s doing.

AA – hi. Sadly the errors of past accidents are still being repeated too often. Head down in the cockpit and the a/c moving under its own power not only carries the danger of the a/c hitting something, but also of hitting someone (yellow jacket or not).

I could tell you the little known tale of a beautiful 1930s light aircraft replica that went off on an unofficial first flight. It took the owner nearly a year to repair that one – if could have been so easily avoided too. Twenty years of work nearly destroyed by a stupid mistake. And the pilot was very qualified on not just vintage but large commercial aircraft as well. He was very embarrassed, and grateful that no one had seen what had occurred.

You haven’t pointed out that he’s not wearing a high-vis jacket either. 😉 Maybe Boris has cornered the market for those!

Very nice, but how long will it last?

Slack operation not using chocks for start, and taxying an open cockpit biplane without a hard hat. Interwar biplanes we’re not known for their forgiving handling.

What fun it would be to bring it to the UK on the quiet. Then book in as a flying visitor to a Shuttleworth display, declaring type as ‘Bulldog ‘ ( they would naturally assume Scottish Aviation trainer ) .

As this beauty apppeared in the overhead, the crowd would be hyper-ventilating ( well , me, anyway ! )

Best of luck with the test flights.

What a seductive aeroplane. It oozes charm. I hope that the builder decides that he needs a squadron of them!

I do believe that it would be prudent to not allow spins in the Bulldog replica, and to display a “SPINS NOT ALLOWED’ placard on the panel. This replica has the small fin. From my knowledge the first Bulldog had a short fuselage, and this was rectified with an extension for the subsequent fuselages. I do not have a drawing for the Mk IV fuselage so can not definitely state if the Mk IV had another extension, but I have not run across any information stating that it was extended. For those of you who want to know, or have an ice breaker in the pub (“Did you know that the Bristol Bulldog….”) the Bulldog had two fins. (Vertical stabilizer). The concave, and convex leading edge. (Not sure of the date this was decried.) This came about due to the poor spin recovery of the Bulldog. So thank you Ed2 for this information. (in this case…isn’t the web great?).
Cheers
Ed1

No Ed you can not spin the aeroplane, but yes you can put a notch in the prop for the good landing .
