EXCLUSIVE
MURRAY WALKER: WW2 Tank Commander
For decades Murray Walker was as famous as the drivers of the Formula One cars and the Grand Prix races he commentated on. Yet, as
John Grehan discovered in a recent interview, Murray never passed a driving test in
his life and when he entered Germany in 1945 it was not in a fast car but a Sherman tank of the Royal Scots Greys!

A REMARKABLE PATROL

Lieutenant Robert Brown was the navigating offi cer of HM Submarine E11 – one of the most successful British submarines to see action during the naval operations in the Dardanelles Campaign of 1915. Based on the actual log kept by Lieutenant Brown, we examine the events of one of those action-packed patrols – her second – which was undertaken between August and September 1915.

A BATTLE OF BRITAIN MYSTERY
On 21 August 1941, Pilot Officer Bob Doe of 234 Squadron shot down a Junkers Ju 88 that was involved in an attack on the Supermarine factory at Eastleigh. Here, Andy Saunders unravels the story of that event and some of the controversy that has
surrounded it ever since. His detective work revealed the identity of the crew – but not their last resting place!

KAMIKAZE STRIKE

The Algerine-class minesweeper HMS Vestal was hit by a Japanese kamikaze aircraft during the closing days of the Second World War. We examine the story of the last Royal Navy warship sunk in the Second World War.

WHEN THE BOMBS BEGIN TO FLY

The Honourable Artillery Company, the oldest regiment in the British Army, has won two Victoria Crosses in its long history – both in the same battle. At Gavrelle in April 1917, Second Lieutenant Alfred Oliver Pollard and Second Lieutenant Reginald Leonard Haine went far beyond the call of duty.

and much more!

Allan

Many thanks for everything in your message!

I will be speaking to the Editor in the next day or so, and will pass on your comments but I suspect the typo error in the blurb above (although I do not know for sure!) was just one of those mistakes that crop up and go un-spotted and was possibly compiled by a Key publishing adminstrator rather than any editorial staff…although I don’t know!

As to the errors you have pointed out, I am sure the editor will be considering your letter for publication and/or will try to reply but I do know that he has an ENORMOUS workload and, with the best will in the world, dealing with all incoming mail is a mammoth struggle. So, his silence thus far should not be taken as any lack of courtesy on his part.

As to errors of fact, this would generally be down to the author of the piece unless the Editor spotted them and knew them to be in error. Otherwise, factual errors can get through of course.

As to errors of spelling, grammar etc etc, a master document and PDF of the page layout is sent to authors of articles for checking and agreement. This way, the author can check for errors of fact and spelling etc, and the spelling etc is also checked by the Editor.

However much care is taken, errors will inevitably occur – especially given the tight schedule for preparation, layout and design and sign-off. But I think an excellent job is done, generally, with all Key titles.

Again, very many thanks.

Andy
