British Aviation History – Need some info

I’ve been tasked to prepare a list of every british aircraft manufacturer and type by my boss this afternoon, and a general overview of aviation in the UK, as part of our preparations for attending some airshows this year and promoting ourselves, and while it sounds like a real undertaking I’m really looking forward to it! 😀

That said, I wondered if there are any particularly good books or sources that might come in useful? Anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks in advance

Jordan

That’s good. Which is your company? – in Northants?

Not quite – I work within the same group of companies that includes this fine manufacturer! Some of us are based down here in Northants, whereas the manufacturing etc happens in Yorkshire.

We’re keen to get things moving in the British aviation industry again, and we just want to illustrate quite how huge it was in the past.

Thanks for the book recommendations, I’ll see what I can do to get some!!

Plus the excellent Putnam series for more in depth info, if you can get them from your local library etc.

I think the best book for your purposes would be “World Encyclopaedia of Aircraft Manufacturers” by Bill Gunston. 336 pages, published by Patrick Stephens Ltd in 1993. Should be easy to find an inexpensive copy. or even in your local libary? Has the A-Z llistings and also hand to see the evolution and mergers and conslidations of the various aircraft manu. companies, cleraly listed and detialed. Would not take long to pull out JUST the British companies. Most company histories/evolutions succinctly described in a short paragraph or two.

If you have time and a few quid , Ron Smith’s British Built Aircraft ( in 6 or 7 parts IIRC) will just about cover anything that has ever been built , and who built it,in the British Isles.

Yes, Google has been a help 😉

Being one of the only aircraft manufacturers left in the UK, we are keen to push the ‘Made in the UK’ image. It’s a real shame about the decline of the industry, but we are doing what we can!! 🙂

I have a list from my previous studies, be aware it is far deeper than you might think at first, especially if you cover all the companies that built one-offs!

I’ve copied this thread in from General Discussion, since the expert domain resides in here. 😀

Start typing into your search engine for starters – certainly the quickest method, if you need information in a hurry. Interesting project tho’, especially for those of us who well tremember the decline and disappearance of dozens of smaller manufacturers since the end of WW2.
