British Phantoms – The Future???

I have started this thread with full knowledge that it has been discussed many times on this forum.. However the other day on this same forum it was pointed out that the Russians had withdrew from the treaty that has seen so many Spey powered Phantoms see the axe!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2LmjNmn7zQ

Below text comes from that thread:

Not the SALT Treaty, but the CFE Treaty. Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty. Russia withdrew from the CFE Treaty last year.

http://www.dod.mil/acq/acic/treaties/cfe/index.htm

The SALT treaty, in relation to aircraft, is for heavy long-range strategic nuclear-capable bombers. Not even such aircraft as F-111s (E/Fs, etc, came under the SALT treaty.

SAVE OUR PHANTOMS!!!

I realise that and the reason for it, but would be nice to have seen it stay in RAF marks.

I quite agree, ZE359 should be displayed in 74Sqn colours. Although, she is complete and under cover which is a very big plus……..

I found it odd that Cosford did not have a (whole) Phantom for the cold war exhibition? so there is at least 1 inside place for a british Phantom if Brampton closes.

For a list of British Phantoms try here as well not completely up to date but has some good photos

Quite agree, Cosford should have had XV408. Those in the no will know the important link between ‘408’ and the Cold War…….

think there may be some confusion with airframes at manston,

there are two phantoms

XV411 (who is rather singed :() http://www.demobbed.org.uk/images/xv411.jpg

And there is ZE360 http://www.demobbed.org.uk/images/ze360.jpg

who seems to be a little lucker in that she’s not been roasted, but are her canopies open all the time?

No confusion on my part either.

ZE360 is used for crew extraction training hence rear canopy missing and is corroding away nicely.

XV411 is used for NLG collapse/fire training and has looked like that for 10years plus.

The Duxford F-4J is well preserved albeit in U.S Navy markings. The Manston F-4J has certainly seen better days and wouldn’t be worth preserving.

I realise that and the reason for it, but would be nice to have seen it stay in RAF marks.

Hi Rob;

No mate, it’s my 1979 Suzuki GS.1000-E that I’ve owned since 1988 when it had a mere 8,000 miles on the clock, from new !!!!!!!!!!!!

Ironically, I’ve got some pix somewhere of it parked-up not far from the Main-Runway inside Wattisham whilst it was still an RAF-Phantom base (1988)

Wish they (F.4’s) were still flying around now; those were the days:cool:

I’m running a 1986 GPz 750 and a Turbo at the moment

Nashio – her canopies are open all the time . She isn’t ‘preserved’ – she is used for the essential training of firemen in casualty evacuation.

Nashio – Well spotted ! That is however FGR.2 XV411 which has been in that state for ten years plus!
No confusion on my part!

She hasn’t looked good for years now. XV435 at Llanbedr suffered similar wing corrosion and ended up being supported on railway sleepers before she was scrapped. Salt air and alloy aircraft just don’t go……….

The F-4J at Manston doesn’t get burnt and isn’t ever likely to. The rules on what can be burnt changed quite a few years ago and burning aircraft isn’t really allowed there. Corrosion is the main threat to her and last time I looked she was getting nasty on the wings.

Good god man look what you have gone and done now, right out with you to the back yard my boy and give yourself ten of the best with a birch twig!!!!.

Sorry gents it seem I have got my Tooms and Bricks mixed up, lesson learned:(.

John.

i have heard this about the manston phantom from the manston museum, people have been trying to get it for years, but i think its past saving now, shame. Everytime i seem a plume of smoke from up there i worry for the beautiful aircraft on the dump

Glad you said that = I did same when it was 1st posted & found same thing

(i.e, nothing)

Dialling in ‘search’ merely referred to some of the personnel’s prior involvement with Phantom’s during their service-careers

I’d be interested to see the real ‘progress/link’, as a Phantom-Phan
