The British spend more on booze to drink at home than on fresh fruit and vegetables, a new breakdown of the nation’s spending habits reveals.
The average total household costs are £406 a week, with more money going on paying off gambling debts than buying books.
We spend £5.90 a week on spirits, wine, beer and alcopops for home consumption compared to a combined total of £5.40 on fresh fruit and vegetables, the survey found.
Households also spend £6.10 a week on chocolate, sweets, cakes, biscuits and soft drinks, according to figures compiled by the Office for National Statistics.
Another £5.40 a week was also spent on cigarettes, cigars and illegal drugs, and an average of just £1.70 a week on hospital services.
And the survey also found households spent more on computer games – £1.10 a week – than they do on equipment for sport, camping or other open air recreation.
Three times as much a week went on satellite and cable subscriptions and the internet – £4.80 – as went on on going to the theatre, museums and the cinema – just £1.60.
The Expenditure and Food Survey examined spending habits from April 2002 to March 2003.
The ONS looked at the weekly spending patterns of a representative sample of almost 7,000 UK households, using a scale of ten income groups.
