Just a heads-up that this Sunday is the Brooklands Aero/Bike/Car Jumble! Andy
By: 682al - 24th July 2007 at 15:06
I’m only just back from War And Peace, aka Rain And Mud.
My thoughts on Brooklands? They might have attracted a bit more interest in the aerojumble if they’d advertised it! Where were the ads? (Not in Aeroplane Monthly, don’t know about Flypast).
I too found some very good stuff in the autojumble, but you have to be prepared to search for it – I’m always amused by people who glance quickly at a stall and dismiss its contents.
Overall though, I would have been slightly disappointed by the day if I had not been on the way down to Beltring anyway. There was some excellent stuff to be found there too, I’m spent up!
Any one know when and where the next aerojumble is in the UK?
I think it must be this one. Never been before but thinking about it:-

It seems like the airshow isn’t happening, but there will be a ‘jumble, fly-in and “small displays”.
Sounds ok, depending on the weather (and advertsing?).

I just started working nights so couldn’t make it either – shame as I would liked to have gone.
Good….all the better for the rest of us…:p ,..Had a very enjoyable day and found some interesting aviation items in the autojumble…….

There’s a big pond in the way in my case. How about a bridge between Holland and the UK?

Sadly, I was in the states, although I had every intention of coming. Hopefully there will be a next time

Would be interested to know how the event went for Brooklands museum trust, was it a sucess for the museum? Is the aerojumble likely to continue at Brooklands?

Brooklands
I was involved with the event yesterday, but only insofar as trying to get stallholders on the “aero” side. I was not the “organiser” per se (that was Brooklands Museum) although I am obviously well placed to comment on the aerojumble aspect of the Brooklands event.
Primarily, the lack of aero stalls was due to one thing; lack of interest from potential stallholders. Well over 300 potential stallholders were canvassed (twice) from my database of traders known to me and who regularly, or sometimes, attend aerojumble events. So, it wasnt down to anything that the organisers did or didnt do that resulted in few stalls. You can’t FORCE people to attend. Obviously e-bay is a BIG factor, and that is a big part of the reason for the abandonment by me of the Shoreham event. As people know, that was always a thriving buzzing event. Those days are gone. Anyway, the recent bad weather, people being on holiday or clashes with other events were a factor, too. No doubt about that.
As to the combination of aero, cars and bikes – I see nothing in that formula which negates the likely attendance figures of either stallholders or punters. Brooklands is a unique location in that it combines aero, auto and bike heritage. So what better than an aero, bike, car event? If it is given some time to “bed in” and problems are ironed out then I think the event can have a future. I really do.
I cannot comment on admission prices etc, that is down to the Brooklands Trust. As to signage, that is down to them too but I would only say that on that point that the location is well signed by the standard brown highways agency visitor attraction signs. Additional signs put out by organisers can be a big big problem with local councils. You can face big fines and have the signs removed and that has happened. Getting permission is usually a no-no, and RAC and AA signs are prohibitive in cost unless you are running something like Glastonbury or RIAT. Several hundred pounds is a big lump out of the thin profits.
Thanks for all your constructive comments and the support of those who attended. Whatever, it was a fun day.

A few thoughts following the Aerojumble today.
Firstly the good points:
Brooklands is an excellent venue and the £8.00 fee for combined aerojumble/museum entry is good value for money; even if I hadn’t bought anything I wouldn’t have wasted my journey (a 200 mile round trip) and as it was spent several happy hours in the museum.
Brooklands museum should benefit from increased attendance and hopefully should be able to offer the aerojumble an appropriate ‘home’ as well as other benefits (such as ‘subsidised’ under-cover venue).
Brooklands is a more central location than Shoreham.
The extra £7.00 for ‘early-bird’ entry is reasonable (although I didn’t take advantage of it today).
The bad points:
The aerojumble itself seemed a shadow of its former self with nothing like the number or quality of stalls that Shoreham had to offer (but I must admit I haven’t been to Shoreham since 2004).
The aero/bike/car format didn’t really work for me as I’m only interested in the aero part. I’m sure it worked for others and there is no reason why it shouldn’t work as long as the aerojumble isn’t totally overwhelmed (this was the reason I stopped going to Popham).
Hopefully this event will go from strength to strength, I will give it my continued support, but I realise that it is early days.
I hope my comments will be taken in the way they were intended and I do appreciate the effort made by everybody who had a stall there today.

Brooklands etc
Yup I went also, sure not as many traders as in years gone by at Tangmere / Shoreham etc. But I guess that this is mainly down to one thing…eBay.
Can but agree with Fly-Buy that the Aero/Auto sections combine to make these events viable. Plus of course finding that un-recognized gem in the respective camp’s misc box!
Still a worthwhile day out, great location worth it just to be able to walk/ climb around the circuit and marvel at days gone by.
Roll on the next one.

I had an enjoyable day there today, weather was good, sunny and warm and held out till about 2pm. I thought I would give the deminishing aerojumble some support this year and held a store there. Buisness was pretty much slow but there were certainly many people around. It was good to sit out in the sunshine, meet and network with people, something that that ebay is unable to provide!
There didn’t seem that many aircraft bits and pieces about but I was pleased with a few acquisitions, a Vickers Viscount Throttle box and 3 foot piece of JU-88 wing flap (still in original green and blue paint).
To survive I think the aerojumble definately needs to be amalgamated with the autojumble stuff, in fact its very surpising how much aviation stuff the autojumble guys bring in with them (The Viscount throttle box being one!).
On the whole a very enjoyable day at a great location (much better than Shoreham). Down side was there wasn’t not a great deal of aerojumble stuff about, still not enough to put me off though, I’ll be back next year.

Well just back from the event, couple of things;
First thing this morning, there were hardly any signs, never seen so many people driving around looking very very lost. The nice chap on the admission desk showed me a map of where all the signs were supposed to be, but going in at 8:05am, they were not there.
Going out was fine, all the signs were up by then.
£15 quid for early bird, bit steep don’t you think!
Dissappointly poor turn out of Aero stalls, in fact I must say, what was there aircraft parts wise, was pretty much junk. Some nice aviation oddities though – don’t get me wrong.
I do feel though that if it wasn’t for the Autojumble element, it would have been a pretty poor turn out.
Never mind, when and where is the next one?
