Whilst nearby London was suffering thunderstorms, Brooklands remained in sunshine whilst the Vimy & Wellington were extracted from the hangar and moved to their new on-site locations. Both their locations (Wellington a temporary structure) are of high quality and put up in quick time. Once all the remaining exhibits and equipment are removed from the hangar it will be dismantled and moved off-site for refurbishment before returning to Brooklands for reassembly 200 yards away. This will then reveal the original ‘Finishing Straight’ on the racing circuit. Some exhibits have already moved to the brand new Flight Shed but this will remain closed to visitors for a while yet.
By next year all this Lottery and Government partially funded project will transform this great museum.

There was an announcement on their website on the day of the move.

It was publicised on the Brooklands Museum Facebook page and reposted on the Air Britain Facebook page. Nothing on the museum’s website however.

Also a great shame that the move of the Wellington from one hangar to another was carried out without publicity. Expect the great and the good got their photos.

Good to see real progress. I know that the projected finish time was originally planned for the Summer and is now about October.
It is a shame that the aircraft in the Hangar and Flight shed are not on display until then.

Only visited once when the museum was in its infancy back in the late 80’s, was part of a working party from Brize Norton that went from LSS ( The VC10 line ) to treat the Sultans VC10 externally with some protective coating, I remember we took them a full set of new covers and blanks for the aircraft, then did a blast around what was left of the track at the museum in an RAF Sherpa minibus, it didn’t like the ermm… banking as we all were leaning into the bend to keep it upright.

What a magnificent exhibit she is, and a tribute to the team that rebuild her.
Never been to Brooklands….yet! But one visit that is high on my list.

Dont worry it was not squashed it was just the inner frame flexing as we took the weight and of course being canvas covered it crinkled, it all went away as soon as it had stood for a day.

Hi Stratosphere
The Brooklands Museum’s VC-10 at Dunsfold will be accessable on 11 March but one must have a ticket for the morning or afternoon sessions, which you can get via the museum web site (if any left). It will do a taxi run in between the two sessions.
