Hi……
As some may know my pictures that have been uploaded on here and other sites have been lets say not up to much and i was starting to get a little fraustrated
so i decided i would buy myself a new camera canon 400d ….. ( which i didnt buy in the end!)
i had a post going asking for advice on what camera i should get
until somebody told me not to bother as it wasnt the camera making the errors it was me …… which of course is 100% true , after lots of convos with people and tutorials on the internet i braved the cold to have a go at what ive learnt so far …. having had my my camera on AUTO over the past couple of years i was ready for some serious business /// If your allergic to orange look elsewhere 🙂
i hope you like p.s sorry for the essay 🙂

I am way outside the league some of the other guys who post some very professional looking images on this forum
That’s NOT True.
Rob,
Fantastic, these images are a great improvement over what you have produced before. The second EZY appears to me to be the ‘cleanest’ shot, so well done. Keep up the good work and keep practicing, practicing, practicing.

im only going to use it for my straighting but it looks really good thanks
si meeting would be really good i would have to let you know the days i have free tho as its very tricky what with work
lol rab you have made my day someone actually said its a big improvement i have to say i had a little smile on my face when i was editing ….. i was very pleased but i think the weather is a big part in that but hey i think im learning lol
manc one of the big issues i have at the mo is shutter speed … even tho my camera does it automaticaly , i just cant get the desired setting when im taking a close up but like you all said practice makes perfect 🙂 ….. just got to wait for the sun again now
thanks all

Alright Rob
Nicely composed images. Which Camera are you using for these shots?
As you say yourself levelling is something you can fix later and always worth the effort as it will improve the image.
the blurry ones are probably the shutter speed being too low for the conditions. Were #5-#7 taken at full zoom length? Some lens can be very soft at max zoom.
A good tip for Aviation photography, Av Mode F9-10 allowing a shutter speed of about 1/400-1/800 at ISO100. obviously wx conditions change from moment to moment so keep checking the light readings. Change the ISO up a little if your not getting the higher speeds or drop to F8-7.1. Anything lower than 7.1 you may notice in pics with angles like #9 that the nose or tail may become blurry due to Depth of Field (DoF).
Also one tip, try and maintain a 3:2 crop ratio, helps when wanting to print photos etc on standard print sizes.
Also shoot on sunny days as you did as poor light and fast moving jets does not make for easy shooting. 😀
This is what I use on my Canon DSLR’s. I hope you find it useful. Keep practising, thats the fun bit!
The last one for me, good shot 😎

rob big improvement mate all looking good but for me it has to be the third from last and the last one too.
WELL DONE practice makes perfect.

Rob, Must agree with Adam, the third from last shots is well composed. I sometime frequent Bristol Airport fence line, I am way outside the league some of the other guys who post some very professional looking images on this forum, however if you want to meet sometime I would be happy to go through some settings etc with you.

Nice shots there…..particularly as being my local I know how far away the Air France and Air Southwest would have been.Forget getting too technical and download an editing programme (free) called Picasa off Google web site….it’s their own and was rated the best free package by the Sunday press. It automatically picks up pics from other storage locations and the straightening tool and sharpening option are fantastic to mention just two.In minutes you can vastly improve results without spending hours, where you could be watching planes, messing with more fancy software….IMHO.

IMHO, your third-from-last shot proves that you have an eye for taking good photos and are capable of editing the results, so hang in there and just learn the technical side of taking photos and when to use which settings.
That shot is very nice, and I’d be pleased if I had taken it. 🙂
