BRS to New York rumours

I know that there have been many rumours but I saw this only today:

“Lulsgate: Bristol International Airport says it is close to attracting bids from two U.S. airlines to fly direct to New York. The company says it expects both American Airways and Continental to make offers to fly a daily service from Bristol.

Airport aviation development director Tony Hallwood said: “We are bang on target to deliver a scheduled daily service in the summer of 2005.”

The news seems to mean the successful conclusion of Project USA, launched with the aim of launching a transatlatic flight from the airport within five years. “

Would be surprised if AA went there.

Filton has a longer runway than Lulsgate and was mooted as a new airport site for Bristol a while back

we in the southwest need a new airport i think the planned airport on the river 7 was the right idea but in the wrong spot if they had put it in devon or gloustershire it would have been ideal another posibility is for R.A.F Lyneham near swindon to become a new comercial airport when it closes in 2012 it has long enough runways road links to the m4 terminal ect.

Yes, BRS has a very very short runway indeed! Living right under the flightpath for runway 09 I get to see all the traffic and the only 767 I can remeber was just one BY 762 on a special charter for something a few years ago. Also there was a MON A300 and a weird white A300 operating for Prime Airways (now bust)

In the news here there has been talk for a few years about the USA to BRS direct service. The sort of time they were saying was Summer/Autumn 2005. The two main airlines were the ones people have already mentioned, CO and AA. I’m not sure about the routes at all, but I can remeber New York being mentioned for sure. They were said to be using the 757 or 767 but unless they exted the runway before their arrival in summer 2005 I don’t see how it’s possible really. A 767 full with fuel and pax on such a short runway seems impossible.

Bristol is supposed to become the main airport for the South West so it’s not that surprising that BRS is likely to be getting more long range services to the USA.

I think CWL has more of a chance of getting transatlantic service.Maybe CO will have a go but forget about AA.

BRS has a pretty short runway doesn’t it? To operate a non-stop service to ORD would probably require a 767; therefore i suppose a 757 to BOS (or JFK) would make sense as it would not require such a heavy fuel load.

Rumour has it that AA are trying for a Boston flight to Bristol.

Bit of an odd decision is it not? I would have thought New York or Chicago would have been a more logical place to start, as they are a bit more popular. Only a rumour though, like you say.

Why would AA want to fly to Bristol? There are many more important cities in Europe that are lacking service. AMS for instance has no service from AA. Would that not be a city that atracts more and better paying (= business) travellers.

If they think they are called American Airways  , then I suspect it’s Continental who are the likely contenders! 🙂

or American Airlines, but never mind! 😉 😀

So would I. CO seems more realistic going by their apparent like of the UK ‘regionals’ 🙂
