After having dragged myself out of bed this morning, i managed to convince various of my family that it would be a good idea to go to bruntingthorpe and see some “Jets” 😀
firstly im sure all who were there will agree it was extremely wet and blusterous, a tribute to the dedication to be found there, that all the aircraft were being tended to and the whole airfield teeming with keen people. it was a real pleasure to go as the atmosphere was unlike that of many other airfields i have visited.
unfortunately my phone was not really up to the job of taking pictures in the rain so i took few pictures. i arrived at about 11:00 to see the Iskara rocket down the runway, and then taxi back with its main gear in the air. after a short break it was then the turn of “Canopus” the resident comrod 😀 after having taxied halfway round the airfield and back down the runway, then spooled up her engines to a real roar before letting off her brakes and shooting down the runway at a good whack kicking up a huge sheet of spray in the process, i then decided to wander off and have a peer round the aircraft and meet a few people that i wanted to meet. while i was sat making jet noises in the victor cockpit, I believe the JP XN594 went rocketing down the runway with a Hartge M3 in hot pursuit, again very impressive. at about 1:30 i had to call it a day, then being drenched from head to toe (including water in my shoes) the last videos i took were of the Canberra WT333.
A thoroughly good day and well done to all involved in making it happen 🙂 (the chap in the victor cockpit is my grandfather :D)

Here’s a couple of (shaky) vids I didn’t have the chance to add earlier. It was whilst watching the Buccaneers that I got the main soaking of the day, but it was worth it 🙂

Another ppic from the day for a fellow forum member. There were some jewels hiding in the car park too!
That is a beauty!! I had one of those, a white 2.0 about 11 years ago, admittedly not in that condition mind you!! This was at Bruntingthorpe for 558’s second test flight in April and it was parked up at Cottesmore as well…

[QUOTE=Eye on the Sky;1252689]Really enjoyed my first visit to Bruntingthorpe this weekend, even though its was moist to say the least. Cherry on the cake was certainly the cockpit tour of the Lightning and its subsequent run, it was superb and a real credit to the LPG. My girlfriend liked the Guppy, but only because it kept her dry, though she soon warmed to the QRA Shed. She even got out of the car and back into the pouring rain to watch the Lightning run, and was very impressed. We both enjoyed the day and will without doubt return in the not too distant future. Many thanks to Andy (320PSI) from the LPG for the cockpit tour, i’ll try and get over one Saturday with the Avon folder.
Thanks to all involved!
Dean
No worries Dean, glad you enjoyed your day with us, great pics by the way 😉
See you soon

Didn’t even realise that was open for viewing. Otherwise I’d certainly have paid a visit. Especialy as we have a Harvard on our squadron! (KF183)
I would have also liked to have had a poke around the DeLorean.
Was that old yellow Vaxhaull (Mk1 Cavalier?) a staff car? If so, I took a pic of that too. And the Rover SD1 in the carpark.

and this is what you missed! We were sorry that we couldnt open the doors but the weather was just too bad – that said an intrepid bunch did make it over and had a look round – I thought perhaps some forumites made it.
Apols for the misty pics, we were having a BBQ!

This was my first trip to Bruntingthorpe and I have to say it was a really good day despite the rain. It was my birthday as well which made it just that bit more special.
Thanks to everyone involved 🙂
For me the highlights were the Buccaneers, and the Lightning, although all the other aircraft were pretty spectacular as well.
The biggest surprise was when me and the missus were stood by the Burger van and saw the Lighting taxiing right past us. I never realised you could get that close to the planes.
Anyway here’s a few (shaky) videos I took on the day:

Awesome Burner shot there Eye On The Sky!! You even captured the “dancing Diamonds” in it which are /were a trademark of the Lightings avon afterburners!

…there straight in front of us was 904, rain beating down on her and the runway, heat rising from her, chute blowing about in the exhaust and to top it a dark menacing sky behind her, she looked perfect a true cold war warrior, shivers down the spine stuff and Im not usually affected by things like that, wonderfull 🙂
I can imagine this image right now, wish i’d been in that van with you guys to have seen this… ![]()

A truly magnificent day, yet again. Got absolutely drenched, first time i’ve seen horizontal rain, but stayed right to the death.
Everyone involved put on a superb show, but 904, once again, was the star in my honest opinion. An absolutely superb run from John Spencer, lighting the burners at brake release. All the recent work that the LPG have carried out on her really stood out as both burners lit perfectly, like a bomb going off!! Good to catch up with you once again Andy, see you on the 3rd August!!

Hi all, didnt get many shots this weekend, as we were busy, sorry
But got a few snaps on Sunday
Sunday first thing just before it started raining

And right at the end, 558 going to bed, and the rain had typically just stopped 😡

The shot I should have got is firmly imprinted in my memory, as we raced (well 71mph in a 1981 Tranny van) after 904 to collect the soaking wet chute and check the brakes I was struck by a great sight, we raced (everything shacking)over the hill there straight in front of us was 904, rain beating down on her and the runway, heat rising from her, chute blowing about in the exhaust and to top it a dark menacing sky behind her, she looked perfect a true cold war warrior, shivers down the spine stuff and Im not usually affected by things like that, wonderfull 🙂
Cheers all 😉

There were some more applicable ‘Comrods’ out there, the last of the Comets were converted to Nimrods on the production line (I think) hence the prototypes having a full compliment of windows. Incidently, Franboroughs old Comet 4 XV814 which became XS235’s spares ship at the end of her life before being sadly broken up, had the Nimrods dorsal fin fitted.
i had noticed that whilst trawling demobbed earlier, a great shame that she was broken up, but at least her parts went to good cause in XS235 she was a magnificent sight, especially to my grandfather who remembered seeing the water tank that they built to find out what the problem was with the airframe concerning metal fatigue, hell of a thing though 🙂
