Brussels – Manchester on SN Brussels Airlines

Here is the report of my return from holiday on 16th September.

We arrived in Brussels Airprot in good time, and checked in right away. I was given seat 14A on the Avro RJ100 OO-DWA.

We boarded at gate B09, and sat down in the aircraft at 14:30 Brussels time for flight number SN2177.

Two stewardesses were on board – a purser called Nadia and one whose name I didn’t get. A screaming toddler sitting at the back made it difficult to hear some announcements. We were told that the flight would last one hour.

The in flight magazine was hande dout before departure, and we were pushed back at 14:44 and headed to runway 25R for take off.

We began our take off run at 14:58 34 seconds, and lifted off at 14:59 7 seconds. There was some cloud just after take off, and soon we were above cloud, and it was cloudy for the rest of the flight.

There was a choice of two snacks – apple pie which I had, or vegetables with a dip and sour cream and chive flavoured pretzels, which my Mum had. The snack was quite pleasant.

We flew over London, and experienced some turbulence on descent. The Neuhaus chocolates were handed round before landing.

At 15:03 the landing gear came down, and at 15:05 39 seconds the aircraft touched down in Manchester, exactly on time.

A brilliant flight with a brilliant airline, and I can’t wait to fly with them from BHX in November!

Thanks for comments!

As to what camera do I use, well I used a Kodak DX4530, but it broke yesterday and I don’t know what the problem is so it’s going back on Monday 🙁 It was a great camera as well, it had all the features that I like – several shooting modes, zoom lens, video recording. It was 5 mega pixels and had a 32MB internal memory, so I am not happy at the moment.

Back to the inflight meals, the veg sticks and cake are actually better examples of the cold Brussels Bistro snacks, the others are indescribable and tasteless.

Interesting that SN are serving EXACTLY the same ‘cake or carrot’ snacks that BA have been serving on mid-morning and mid-afternoon flights in Economy. They must be using the same Dutch supplier. Personally I thought they were awful.

BA have just changed the sweet option, and are about to change the savoury option, the new ones being a slight improvment.

Stieglitz – I will take note of the place you recommend, as I will definitely visit Brugge again, it’s my favourite city. Oud Brugge is one I like (can really recommend) because we went in there a couple of times for meals, and the food is wonderful and the chips are the real thing. We avoid eating on the Markt because of the prices, but just away from here are some really great places I think.

Back to Zandloper, we went in here alot in 2001 and 2002 without any problem at all, we were surprised when we had that hassle with the beer (and just glad that we are tourists who know Belgian beer so we ended up making the owners look stupid :diablo: )

In November I will be in Falstaff or Chez Leon (though I prefer Falstaff) for a meal because I only have a few hours in Brussels to buy some beer.

I am sad to here that. Sometimes the tourist can be a ‘easy’ target for bad beersellers. But if you visit Brugge again, you must visit ‘de kurketrekker’. Not known for their beers (sorry Comet), but for there excellent meals and wine.

Slightly off topic here, but the De Zandloper in Brugge is a bar which likes to think it can con tourists, until they dealt with us and met their match!!

They serve beer in the wrong glasses, thinking that tourists don’t know one beer from another, but when we went in and ordered Malheur Blond and Kwak, we knew immediately that it was wrong when the Malheur glass contained something resembling De Koninck in colour, and the Kwak glass contained a pale blond beer. The bimbo of a “barmaid” thought it was funny, until they realised that we knew our beers, then they had to bring the beers in the correct glasses, so it cost them an extra bottle of beer because there was no way we were paying for beer served in the wrong glasses.

When in Brugge, visit ‘t Brugs Beertje (sadly closed on Wednesday, that is why we ended up in Zandloper). There the beer is poured in front of you, and it is always in the correct glass. The beer range is superb as well.

The owners of De Zandloper are con artists and low lifes!!!!!!!! (And it would really please me if they happened to read this, or the review I wrote about them on Luchtzak.be!)

Thanks for the great report of our airline here. I am pleased to see that they are doing such a good job.

If ever you go to Brugge, avoid the bar called De Zandloper.

Too late. 😮

The tub of vegetables was not too bad, and more tasteful than some Brussels Bistros.

Which Bistro in Brussels has bad food? Just want to know so that I can avoid it! 😉

I will enjoy BHX-BRU, I think BHX is a superb airport to depart from, especially on the 08:50 flight to BRU, the airport is quiet at the time you are checking in, it certainly was when we did that run in March.

I too like Kwak, though we didn’t drink on the Grand Place this time because we headed out to Schuman to go to the best chippie in Brussels and then went to the Atomium to go up inside it the day before it closed down (until March 2006). Such a shame it will be to see the delightful Atomium covered in scaffolding.

If ever you go to Brugge, avoid the bar called De Zandloper.

I’m actually based here in the UK, but find myself traipsing over every few weeks. Great fun at the moment, but I guess the novelty will wear off eventually. 😉

Understood re the Leffe; found myself quaffing Kwak with my Dutch / Italian / Belgian colleagues on Grand Place a couple of weeks ago, hence me driving over there next week. I need to bring a few bottles of that stuff back here and unfortunately my laptop case ain’t big enough to cope….. 😀

Enjoy your Birmingham – Brussels flight, that’s the one I usually do. 🙂

SteveYoung – I don’t like the Brussels departure lounge very much, I am much happier in the arrivals hall at BRU. Very, very, very (times a thousand!) lucky you for working in Belgium, what would I give to get a job and move over there? I like SNBA, there are some great crews on there (especially if you get a steward called Carlos!)

I don’t post my photo because I don’t have any nice recent ones, the last one of me was taken on an SNBA aircraft by a steward called Carlos, and that was months ago. I didn’t have any taken in September.

Also for fans of Belgian beer, don’t restrict yourself to Leffe whilst you are there, you can try hundreds of the beauties! Sloeber is my own favourite.

The tub of vegetables was not too bad, and more tasteful than some Brussels Bistros.

I’ve got to say, I do like SN Brussels. Very nice bunch of folks. I tend to use them whenever I’m off to Brussels, although I’ll actually be driving over next week instead.

Only downside is that I’m now only four weeks into the job, and already sick of the inside of Brussels departure lounge… 🙁 The aviator bar does a nice Leffe though, and not a bad price. 😉
