BSAC 220 wishes Happy New Year 2008

Hello shipmates!

I would like to wish everybody here a happy new year 2008.
I introduce the product of may attempts to reconstruct how a BSAC 220 would have looked like. I chose a “25 de Mayo” replacement named “9 de Julio” which is another national day for Argentinia.

It seems to me that this might have been (or even might be) a workable small Aircraft Carrier. I don’t think that it could operate Hawkeyes or Prowlers but many other aircraft would do.

Have a nice Year

Thanks, shiplover! 😉

I must say, I can’t pronounce myself about the changes you are proposing for the BSAC’s design (I’m far from knowing it all about warship, really far…), but I trust you about them…

That said, I think you are right: that a similar design could well be produced within the next two decades, especially when you see how agressive the Spaniards are when having to export their kit (remember the Australian BPE ?). I won’t bet about its nationality, but Brazil is IMHO a serious contender…

Hi Merlock!

You put it right: This design rocks! While “reconstructing” it, it became some sort of “wet dream” of mine ;-). In a relaunch of this design I would propose the following changes: two diesel generator rooms with an electric motor for one screw each seperated by one or two compartments. I would add one gas turbine generator on the port side stern to have the exhausts out of the approach path of incoming aircraft. This could reduce the island size. I would add new planar Radars on the island.
I could imagine that one day we see a similar design from china or brazil as first carrier or a follow on of Sao Paulo.

I got this from one of these discussion boards a while back :
-SNIP-
Just when was this ship design first proposed, and when was it offered?

THanks a lot, Bager, that’s what I was looking for! 🙂

I see that the BSAC would have recieved some 75m catapults, the same than the CdG, I guess. Interestingly It would have made him an almost custom-made wessel for the Rafale…

In fact, I think this kind of vessel is likely to re-launch the neverending debate of “a few Big CV vs. more but smaller CV”, because it could carry the same plane-per-ton ratio than bigger designs, and thos planes would have had similar (the same ?) performances than those of big CVs…

Plus, in my eyes the BSAC’s design actually ROCKS! 😀

Good work, Shiplover.
May be one day Navantia will declassify the blueprints of its BSAC designs (those that, says the legend, China tried to copy 😉 ).
Till then, great to have your drawings…

Regards

Seems so puny compared to a Nimitz…….I know, everything else does, but its all i have to go against. I know, Ill never forget the first time i saw a nimitz class carrier, i believe it was the TR……i was about 10 years old, i was in awe…….just no way to describe its size. And then, before 9/11 i could just drive onto Norfolk Naval base and drive around, including stopping at mccdonalds that was literally right in front of “carrier row” at Norfolk…..dam i miss the good ole days.

But, whoever drew these drawings, my hats off to ya…..great job you have 2 thumbs up from me, you did a stand up job, just for the hell of it.

I got this from one of these discussion boards a while back :

Ingeniería Naval, septiembre 2002 pag 61 y sucesivas

Eslora total……………………………..241,8 m
Eslora entre perpendiculares……………….222,8 m
Manga de trazado…………………………..29,5 m
Puntal a la cubierta de vuelo……………….22,5 m
Desplazamiento a plena carga………..25.500/27.000 t
Tipo propulsión……………………….CODAG/COGAG
Potencia propulsora………………………57/66 MW
Velocidad máxima continua ………….25,5/26,5 nudos
Autonomía a 15 nudos …………………7.500 millas
Operaciones de aviones hasta ……….estado de mar 5
Operaciones del buque hasta ………..estado de mar 9

Did Bazan….which was later known as IZAR…..and now is know as Navantia…..ever release any drawings or general arrangements of the BSAC/SAC 220 or 200?

Was there a really serious sales and design effort behind this project, or was it just a long shot sales pitch to China?

I have a slightly more detailed black and white drawing of the SAC-220. It looks to have two 75m cats. It looks to be able to fit about 20 hornets and four Hawkeyes. To be honest, I think the slightly smaller SAC-200 is a better deal. It could be used as a cheap training carrier or when used with a squadron of say a navalized JAS-39C/D could be an effective training. The slightly larger conventional version of the Charles de Guelle offered to India by DCN is a much better light carrier design.

Well, it seems that the SAC-220 & 200 were offered seriously to the Brazilian an Argentinian navies and later to China. Of course it would be a general design, the country interested in it would must to pay a more detailed R&D work.
Navantia/Izar/Bazan never makes public a lot of information of its designs (included that builded!).
Marketing has never been a Spanish strong point.

Just when was this ship design first proposed, and when was it offered?

*Bump*

Wow! I hadn’t seen this thread, before! Thanks for those drawings, Shipolvern they a splendid! 🙂

Out of curisity, I have heard about the BSAC 220 project many times, but never managed to get mor informations about its specifications.

I know it was supposed to be a 27,000 tonnes STOBAR or CATOBAR vessel, but, what about its other dimensions ? What were its planned speed or range ?
What where its aviation’s installations supposed to be ? Air group size ? Lenght of catapults ? Decks surfaces ? Elevators capacity ? Etc…

All informations welcome, thank you… 😉

If I was Argentina (and Brazil for that matter) and I had the money to spend in the future on carriers I would take a very serious look at the ADS being built by India.

India plans to build two to three of the things and it looks like a farely adaptable design, I would think the Indian yard (Cochin isn’t it?) would welcome building one or two more with the added cost savings of purchasing in scale. Argentina could go for a pure CTOL fit or maybe even move to STOBAR. As for Brazil it would probably be a very suitable replacement for the Sao Paulo down the line and if it was a joint purchase to a common fit with Argentina there could be significant cost savings to be had.

Wow, thanks for that gift (Muchas gracias)

I never saw before that design in so great detail till now. Family ties with SCS and Príncipe de Asturias are very clear.

Great work!

That design has always been rather interesting one, its nice to see it “coming alive”.

One of the most interesting factors of it is that it was reportetly offered to china during the 90’s but obviously nothing came from it. Yet it would be nice to see this design in PLAN colours as well…if anyone is up for the task?? (Not me, I’m tied with the Luda’s and Jianghu’s for while)
