just a small selection of pics when i went hiking around Scotland for a week about 25 years ago. one of my stop offs was RAF Lossimouth where i perched myself upon a ww2 pilbox on the outside of the camp. between me and the see was a golf course right under the flight path of everything landing. i dont think the pillbox is there anymore as it was due to be demolished.
my next stop was a short hop, skip n bus ride around to RAF Kinloss.
i basicaly built a bivi in the woods where ever i stopped. sometimes this was right next to the fence line of the camp. i never got moved on or had any hassle lol

That seems right, I think those ‘8’s were applied to the Shacks at about that time.
The only Nimrod accidents in that area were the ones mentioned above though.Nice pics, looking forward to seeing the others:)
The ‘8’s were applied prior to the 40th anniversary events in 1989, but may have been applied as early as the 8/8/88 event.
Also, Nimrod R.1 XW666 ditched just offshore in the Moray Firth, not far off of Lossiemouth, not in Findhorn bay.
Kind Regards,
Scotty

ive just had a look at my other pics and XZ284 was without the probe. XZ284 and XV244 up n down n going round n round as ive plenty of pics of them. the Nimrod that ditched in the bay broke its back but all the crew got away safely.
shame about the Shack

if memory serves me right it was 1988 or 89.

not long after my visit up that way a Nimrod ditched in the bay beyond the runway at Kinloss.
There was the Nimrod (XV256) crash in Nov 1980, and the Nimrod R.1 (XW666) ditching in May 1995, so I guess you mean the former.
Also, the Shackleton in your pics, WR965, was lost in April 1990.
The Nimrod pictured is without a refuelling probe, so I’m guessing these pics are early ’80s, almost 30 years ago?

I would have said it was longer than 25 years ago, with the Shacks there too.
It’s at least 21 years ago, frightning isn’t it?!
The Shackletons left Lossie in April-June 1991, and the 100 sqn Canberra TT.18s were retired later that year.
I think the F-111s may have left the UK in the following year.
Lovely step back in time there Pistonrob, though Mawgan was at the other end of the country the scenes were the same, excellent spotting days
Wouldn’t the Phantoms have mainly operated out of their home base at Leuchars?

not a single phantom oddly enough. the Herc was a USA thing and did you notice the German Navy Tornados.. glad the pillbox is still there. not long after my visit up that way a Nimrod ditched in the bay beyond the runway at Kinloss.

No Phantoms then? There should have been lots of them about, on Bear-Baiting duties out of Lossie.
Anon.

I seemed to spend most of the early 1970s on top of that pillbox – happy days!
