Bucking Bronco and Terrible Texan, Air-to-Air Academy 2010

Hello all,

Here’s a quick taster of what I was up to during the weekend over at the Belgian airfield of Zoersel, my first ever air-to-air! Hope you enjoy, more to come later…

My sincere thanks go out to everyone who made the academy possible, first and foremost Eric Coeckelberghs for making his idea happen!

Cheers, Huw

Thankyou so very much for all the comments! As promised here is an update with some more of the air-to-air photos taken during the weekend.

The Speed Canard is a rather odd looking bird at first glance, but after havint it as my first air-to-air subject and getting a backseat ride later in the day I really rather like it now.

The Tipsy Nipper pilots were having a lot of fun posing for the Skyvan during the flights, that really rubbed off and indeed I enjoyed photographing them more than any of the other aircraft.

This shot of a Stampe has to have the best backdrop of all of the aircraft, flying over a large area of unspoilt Belgian forest.

And to finish two quick photos from my backseat ride in the Speed Canard later in the day, it’s really agile!

Its fair to say when we formated on the Texan for a low and fast pass down the runway I got rather excited!

I took so many photos over the weekend so keep checking my Flickr page as I upload more.

Ideed a great picture. Academy seems to be a wonderful innovative idea. There’s defnitely a market for this.

Belgian airspace can’t be much less crowded, can it? Where there’s a will there’s a way……….;) I’ll bet some of this forum’s top notch photographers would bite someone’s hands off for the chance.

sounds as though someone should try to copy it here!:D

Yes, you would think that there is a market for that idea here, maybe our airspace is too clogged to allow it?

Can see the pic now, fantastic, must be quite a unique sight from the ground, a Bronco and Texan chasing a Skyvan!

Due to the ‘putor I’m on I can’t view pics at the mo, but can you explain about the Air-to-Air Academy?

The Air-to-Air Academy is an event set up by aviation photographer Eric Coeckelberghs where photographers can sign up to go on photoflights in the Skyvan. The event is held over in Belgium at the airfield of Zoersel and co-incides with the annual Chipmeet. The idea is that pilots who what thier aircraft fly as the subjects for the photographers, a win win situation!

It’s certainly something I’d recommend if you want to do some air-to-air photography.

When do we get to see more?

Cheers, E! On friday after coursework deadlines.

I’m guessing they used the Skyvan, which is an excellent camera ship for head ons. You don’t get battered by the airflow and have more room to compose your shots. Look forward to some more – well done.

Thanks very much Darren! We did indeed use the Skyvan, it was much less wind blown in there than I expected. I guess its one of few camersahips that offer those head-ons.

The academy is a great idea and certainly gets you close to the action. I’m guessing they used the Skyvan, which is an excellent camera ship for head ons. You don’t get battered by the airflow and have more room to compose your shots. Look forward to some more – well done.
